Just got a 1986 vfr 700. Problem is after riding a while sitting at a long red light the temperature gauge starts rising the rpm flutters and it dies. Start’s right up. the fan starts and when i start riding the temp goes right down! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The temperature/fan operations sounds OK. When moving there is enough airflow to keep the engine at its lowest normal temp which will be 80C and around 1/4 on the gauge. At a standstill with no air flow the coolant heats up until the thermoswitch on the radiator is activated switching the fan on, at around 100C and 1/2 way on the gauge. The fan drives air through the radiator and the coolant temp drops and the fan is switched off. That cycle should happen over and over if the bike is idling and sitting still. The rpm flutter and stall may or may not be related to the fan switching on; if there is a sudden voltage drop that might interrupt the sparks. I'd suggest checking the battery and charging system using a voltmeter and maybe getting the fan to come on by jumpering the thermoswitch; pulling the wire off the switch and connect it to any earth point completes the fan power circuit.
WELCOME this form may be the best #1 source on this planet for good info on 1986 VFRs. how many miles on your bike ? first thing to do on a new acquisition is usually to change all the fluids, including a drain and flush of the fuel tank.
