What's your method for music on the bike?

  1. No music, at all, anytime. Too hazardous

King Diamond is impossible to listen to even in the car for me. It would be like watching a movie while driving!

King Diamond is awesome!! When I listened to my Zune while riding I'd usually have his stuff on, Candlemass, or something similar.

I didn't realize this was also about 'what music' I listen to, just 'if' I do.

I'm a Blues fan, Joe Bonamassa, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, and of course SRV (Stevie Ray Vaughn). All of Elvis's old R&B too.

After the Blues, I'm a very eclectic listener, everything from Daughtry, Shinedown, Theory of a Deadman, Nickleback & Hinder (plus old school metal - e.g. JP) to Bagpipe Rock (Prydein), Old School Rap (Sir Mix-a-lot, Ton Loc, etc.), Hip Hop, New Jack, R&B, Soul, Swing, and even a little Country (more pop/blues stuff though).

I find that I listen to the music that fits my mood (other than blues, which I listen to all the time); I have almost 3000 songs in my iPod, 7.8 DAYS worth of music, so I've got something for just about every mood...

I guess that's part of my concern, I love music, and I get to singing, playing 'air guitar', etc. and I don't think that'd go well while riding my bike... Not to mention, I don't just 'let it play', I'm always fishing for the 'right song' for however I'm feeling at the moment (making a quick playlist), so I'd always be messing with my iPod, with my gloves on, and I'd hit a fricken BARN because I was so distracted trying to get 'to just the right song'...

There are already some great responses here (and there was a very popular and similar thread a year ago...use the search function to find that one). I personally do not ride with tunes. There is perhaps nothing more important to me than music. I live for music. But, I generally want to devote my full attention to it. Similarly, I want to devote my full attention to riding so that I enjoy it to the fullest and so that I don't die prematurely! I just don't feel one can safely ride a bike without hearing the environment. (I do wear earplugs but I can still hear the important things.)Do you read a book when making love? I see that as the same sort of issue. As well as just being my own personal decision, my global view is that we modern humans try to do too much at the same time and in the process we don't fully experience anything. When I do something I do it to the fullest and do not multi-task. Work is for mutli-tasking. But, as long as you are safe the way you ride, more power to ya for being able to juggle and ride at the same time.

P.S. I also have concerns that most earbuds let in too much wind noise so a) your hearing is damaged and b) your hearing is damaged all the more because you have to crank the tunes in order to hear them above the noise. You cannot enjoy music if your ears are fried.

Hard to disagree with you. However, I always wear earplugs, and when I do listen to music it's through the Scala Rider speakers in my helmet with my ear plugs in. I can hear the music and what's happening around me. However, I can't hear my wife, but that's true even without the ear plugs and speakers and while in a quiet room. Hearing is a wonderful and flexible thing!

No problems here, Mr. Knife...that is the perfect solution to keep your hearing AND listen to tunes.

And again, whatever floats your boat (safely) is fine by me.

P.P.S. I DO take the iPod and listen to tunes at a rest stop. That way, the music still is rolling around my brain when I remount. I "hear" music best when I internalize it. Newer music really sticks that way. I love when I am just getting familiar with a great piece of music.

Ear plugs???? never used then in my life - don't think wind noise is that big of a problem.
I would not put anything in my ears while riding w/ a helmet on, that is why I modified my headphones to go into my helmet as shown in the link from my last post above.
I can hear the engine and traffic with no problems and think ear plugs would limit both.

Everyone is different but there are alot of studies showing that the frequencies of wind noise are particularly damaging to hearing. I wear ear plugs at most concerts and when I drum (besides drums and percussion I play guitar, violin, flutes, and several ethnic instruments). I have to protect my hearing so that I can enjoy sounds for a loooong time. Google hearing loss to understand the very fragile mechanism that is our ears. The tiny little hairs that actually allow hearing do not grow back once they are damaged. But again, everyone is different...some of us are more susceptible to hearing loss and others are much better. I fully believe in letting everyone choose how to live their life. Music is my reason for living so I am very particular and protective.

    Party on, Garth!

    "WHAAAAAAAT?!!!"

Maybe it's my cheapo Scorpion Exo 700 helmet but after 20 minutes at 130 kph, when I get off, my ears are just ringing! Ear plugs FTW.

Ear plugs don't hinder my ability to hear the engine and traffic. Besides, I can feel the engine anyway, and I do have eyes and mirrors. Ear plugs do, however, block out almost all of the annoying, tiring, and damaging wind noise. I cannot stand to ride without ear plugs. The wind noise drives me insane and tires me out. It's also distracting, breaks your concentration and is, therefore, potentially dangerous.

i use scullcandies also and love them. even with them turned up to 11 i can hear what some have called "the important stuff"(prob due to weak mp3 player). and maybe its just me but i get dialed in by listening to some music. any time i hit any twisties i got "Chevelle" playing, it hleps me and makes the whole ride that much more enjoyable.

One thing I really loved about the earphones I got with my zune is they blocked out wind noise and I could listen to music while still hearing other motorists. I only listened to music on long, less spirited rides as a general preference but often wore the plugs to help with the wind (sans music).

You hit the nail on the head exactly. That is why I don't listen to music when I ride.

Also, I didnt mean to hijack the thread and turn it into a discussion of musical taste, I just had to say something when I saw other fans of the same group.... it was the teenager coming out in me :).

You see... I knew I was doing something wrong. She doesnt mind that as much as when I smoke and miss the ashtry. Im just kidding, I cant read.

I do also use skull candy headphones with my mp3 player. With either the cell/mp3/gps or just an mp3 player I have the volume at a managable level where I can hear the music or I can hear whats going on around me. I also have a Shoei RF 1000 and that kills a lot of the wind noise.

I listen to MP3 player through my Autocom Unit. I find they make my drive more enjoyable, and in a way, focus more in the twisties when I get into a grove with the music. One trick I do with the Autocom Unit, if I want silence, is to blow/activate on the mic, which causes the music volume to automatically lower to %30.
