    Hello everybody.
I'm quite new to this sort of thing, joining forums and the like. However, having returned to motor biking after nearly 40 years and bought myself a 2000 VFR800 this summer it's gone down with the dreaded rectifier / regulator. Iv'e managed to pick-up a replacement unit which I think looks like the up-graded model from Honda Part No: SH689BD. Thing is, it comes with different plugs to the original which means I'm having to disconect the contact spades in each plug in order to use the original plug case. Making matters even more difficult for me with no electrical skills at all, it comes with an extra wire in the coloured loom. So, where the original had one green, one red and one black wire, the replacement now has two reds, two greens and one black! The contact spades on the yellow wires are bigger but that should'nt be too much trouble to change.
Would anybody have an idea how I might wire-up the coloureds ?

Graham, you can just connect the 2 colored (reds & greens) together then to their respective colors on the small loom coming from the main wiring harness. Lots of people have had trouble with this connection point (rectangular plastic plug-in) so it's fairly common to solder the wiring together, color to color of course, & eliminate the possible problem. Some experts will also caution against soldered joints, preferring correctly crimped instead. In my experience so long as the right solder is used (NOT acid-core) & there isn't a bunch of rigid mounting type of vibration involved, soldering works fine. The 3 alternator (yellow) wires can go together in any order. This is my solution to the dilemma of cooling the RR on my '95. Crude heatsink with the RR on the back of it, upgraded Honda part (RR) used. The existing wiring was "just" long enough to work OK. Might have helped the problems that neptun750 had on his bike (post just before yours). If you look around on the site you'll find a whole lot of info on this issue. Also not a bad idea to take the 2 "output" wires & ground wire directly to battery posts, be sure to fuse the extra wiring. If more discussion required I'll try to help.
