    Howdy everyone

After 5 years of not riding (moved to the country and my very old CB doesn't have the legs or suspension for our shitty country roads!!) I just picked up an 04 gen 6 with 60,000km on it - some genius managed to drop it on both sides so I got it for quite the bargain (or so I thought!).

Took her for a burn to get used to it and figure out how well she ran (6 hour round trip) and it was great. Pretty hot through QLD heat/Brisbane traffic but I've read that's normal.

I went out the other day for a 20 min ride and the dreaded "FI" light came on and the engine cut out twice. Clutch in and out and she kept running but it was unnerving. I've read that loose grounds can cause this? I took the fairings off but can't find the grounding box (probably not what it's called sorry!) and I would really appreciate any help!!

    Thanks and happy riding!!

When stationary with the Sidestand down Ignition on does the Fi light flash a code?

    - A very common issue is Main Fuse B 30amp next to your Starter Relay. The fuse supplies ALL your EFI stuff. Have a very close inspection of this fuse, its holder and the near wiring and single wire joiner can all suffer badly from overheating, burnt high resistance connections which can kill the engine and bring on the Fi light. (See Attached.)

    - Next have a good look at your charging system. The Stator 3 wire connector to the R/R and the output connector from the R/R are both weak links that cause issues. Verify your charging voltage at the battery both at idle and 5000rpm both hot and cold engine looking for around 13.5 to 14.5v. Also, what is the age and state of your battery? Make sure terminals are clean and tight.

Check the above first. Ground issues you are referring to are largely (not solely) to do with the 5gen VFR yours is a 6gen.
Verifying proper voltages at the Engine Stop Relay is another important check, save that one for later!

Mate......I've just had a close look at your photos!!!! You have the WRONG BATTERY fitted.!! The OEM is a YTZ12S rated at 210cca, yours is a YTX7A only rated at half that being 105cca, it also has Only Half the amp/hour rating!!!!. Get a new battery to start with.

And. What's with the aftermarket added 3 position switch, fuse and brown wiring? Whatever it's for, make sure it is not being powered from Main Fuse B. No accessories should be wired to this important EFI power source.

Let's know how you get on.
    Cheers from down south!

Hey mate - thanks so much for the killer reply!

No FI light/code with side stand down/ignition on.

Thanks for the pic - checked them and nothing was burnt out and the fuse itself was very clean. Contacts all good but it had all been shoved in very tightly next to the battery.

The guy I bought it off said he replaced the battery... I'll get the proper one tomorrow!!

It put out 12.73 cold/not running and about 14 when on/a little hotter.

The aftermarket stuff is a switch for heated grips (super useful in almost outback qld...) - I had a look and it's not running off fuse b :)

I checked it all and went for a short blast yesterday and the FI light came on over a decent bump in the road but the engine didn't cut out... Today went for another very short ride and nothing happened.

Thanks heaps for the reply it was very useful.
