I’m looking at getting another fuel tank that has the filter cap fitted but no key, I can undo the bolts and get it off

Is there a number on the lock inside the cap I can use to get another key ?

If you can undo the bolts and get it off I would just take it to the nearest decent locksmith. They could whip up a key no problem.

There is a number stamped, last three digits like "D40"

If the cap is off, take it along to test so they can adjust the new key if needed. Sometimes they can be a little stiff. Don't forget you need to press on the internal ring to "close" the cap in your hand to test.

You really got the cap off without the key and didn't damage anything?

Thanks Captain, I thought you would have a solution

    These numbers are where?

No I didn’t get the cap off, the person selling it on eBay did

Be sure the cap is vented style unless it is going on a California fuel tank.

    My cap pictured, is unvented.

You can't undo the bolts and take it off. You would need to pick it or destroy it to remove it.
