Okay, I've been riding my new VFR for more than a week now and have a question about adjusting the mirrors. What is the trick to adjusting the mirrors so I can best see the car directly behind me?

With previous bikes I've owned, the mirrors were mounted on the handlebars which spread the mirrors out and provided a wider field of view that included the car directly behind me, say at a stop light, as well as cars to my right and left. I never felt the mirrors limited what I could see.

However, on the VFR, the mirrors are mounted to the fairing, and nicely tucked in, but seem to provide a more narrow field of view, I only see part of the car behind me. I also see my elbows in the mirrors. If I adjust the mirrors so I don't see my elbows, I'm seeing even less of the car behind me. Call me paranoid but I like to know if there is a car right on my tail. As it is now I have to pull my elbows in and/or lean to one side to see what is directly behind me.

I've tried the mirrors in several positions, including moving the stalks as far out as possible. Maybe this is just something I have to learn to live with on a bike that is more sport than touring.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

I run aftermarket CBR 929 mirrors on my '03. They sit lower and stick out a bit further than the stock 6th gen. VFR mirrors. They bolt right on. Or you could go with mirror extender blocks. You could either fab them up yourself or snag a pair on Ebay.

you can go with mirror extenders, commonly availible, but before you try that try losening and adjusting the angle where the mirror arm goes to the bike. Many people mistakenly believe you can only adjust at the ball joint that goes from the mirror to the arm. But if you play with where the arm goes into hte bike, a significant difference can be obtained. Many times they are adjusted too far forward, decreasing the width, so the dealer can fit more bikes on the floor.

Spike had a good suggestion. For me though, the mirrior extenders did the trick and it's almost impossible to tell that they aren't a stock piece. They really opened up my line of vision.
