I picked up another camera and am looking at mini tripods to carry on the bike. I was looking for a small telescopic leg type and ran across this type with flexible legs: Amazon.com : Precision Design PD-T14 Flexible Compact Camera Mini Tripod : Flexible T : Electronics

Any of you VFR'ers use them? If so how handy are they and how well do they hold up, or on to things. My camera is a Sony H50 and weighs 1.3lbs.

This is the type I was originally looking at:http://www.amazon.com/Cowboystudio-M...s=mini+tripods

So any camera people here with experience with mini tripods?

Don't really know my camera models very well. Is yours an SLR or a point and shoot. 1.3 pounds is fairly heavy for one of those mini tripods to balance.

I have a few of those mini type tripods and they all fall over with my SLR on it. The lens is off balanced for such a small tripod. I don't think the tension thingy on what you are looking at will be strong enough to hold your camera in the manner depicted in that image either.

I do have one mini tripod that works quite nice on the SLR though. It is one of those that had one leg a little longer than the other two. That leg gets put out front to counter the weight of the lens. That leg is also telescoping for steadying your camera for stand up shots if you tend to be a little shaky.

To be quite honest with you, I would just get a little point and shoot for carrying around on the bike, unless you are more advanced photographer and tend to use different lenses and the such.

Of the two tripods, one has a mounting plate that is attached to the camera and has telescopic legs. The other has a standard 1/4-20 male threadmount and the legs will fold and are flexible. Trivia-wise that 1/4-20 is a Whitworth and has been a standard thread for almost 100 years.

Your Sony is a great camera but it is neither an SLR or a DSLR. On some runs of those Sony's good as they are, there were some shutter release problems including the shutter buttons falling off the cameras. Sony had the same ricebowl shit going as Honda did with the R/Rs..

If you want to and have the time instead of Amazon. try Adorama in NYC. If it's photographic they have it. The site has a drilldown function by size, dimension, price, manufacturers and more that ya really want to know. Can't say for sure but lots of stuff from them ships free. Another NYC big boy is B&M. Both outfits take care of biz and with Adorama, I have never (really) ever had a problem.

Check out pods that are for the various solid state video cameras too. Some are clamp type and some even have spikes for nailing them to a tree..

HD botiques ain't got shit on these photo supply outfits when it comes to farkles..

Like most anything else these days, the range of capability and prices on tech gadgets is all over the map. Fifteen years ago Nikon came out with their first "consumer" camera, the Coolpix 900. Next in like was the Coolpix 950. Oot the door the 950 was MSRPd for +/- 1100 pesos. Today they are worth aboot 10-15 pesos tops. Both Fuji and Leica have "point and shoots that are 4K +.

The little guy point and shoots are very limited and some have one file system that is OK and OK for prints up to aboot 8X10 but not much more. This this has little to do with quality but only capability. Then we got the newest stuff from Hassleblad , Nikon and Canon that set ya back mucho pesos.

Thanks for the info on NYC places. This is not an SLR camera. Though it has many SLR functions even thru the viewfinder metering. I got it for a basic point and shoot camera for trips because of the telephoto lens. Hey it's used and was only $115 and works great so far and does more than I want/need for most shots.

On trips I end up in some weird places and the mini tripod could be used as a stabilizer for some shots and selfies from a distance. Something 6"/7" when collapsed and a foot or so expanded. I'm far from taking award winning pics.

Nothin wrong with the point and shoot cameras. One lives in my rig. What you have in the Sony is an EFV (electronic viewfinder)

Nothin wrong with used cameras or lens' either. My main DSLR sold for aboot 2k + when new. I got it for 700 pesos.

Bottom line here is that a tripod wiil improve the technical qualities of your pix.

If you got a manual with your Sony, great! if not you can get a free download (I didn't look) from www.retrevo.com. They are not in Nigeria or East Timor so the site is safe.
