Hey guys and gals I have a problem(s) with my 87 VFR700F2!! I got it second hand and am just starting to get it up and running!!Had planned on getting it going for this season but ran into some financial troubles..so she is probably down for the season!! I am having some issues with poor performance through 4th,5th,and 6th gears when trying to cruise at a steady pace(50mph) but if I give it some gas it will take off like a rocket in all upper gears!! Stopped into a shop to talk to the mechanic! He started with compression and improper jetting!! Original owner took off the dual factory exhast and put on a 4 into 1 Kerker preformance exhast!! Not sure if this bike was jetted properly and a proper Kerker kit was installed upon changing the exhaust!!!He told me that would sink me about $500 to find out if he had done it and about $100 for the kit if he didn't!! He would do all the carb set up for the 500 if that was the issue! 2 days later I go to take her out for a run and my 2 week old battery is DEAD!! I recharged the battery back to spec and check the battery under load.At 5000 rpm the manual says I should be between 13.7 and 14.5 v with a fully charged battery!! Well the batt was charged to 12.6...at 5000rpm it only goes up to 12.8,,so I assume I have a charging system failure somewhere?Would this cause the lag that I am getting in upper gears???improper charging=improper spark=not burning off fuel properly..I guess I have I good idea that it does but I am no where near a mechanic!! Also I have the California model that has all the emmision control stuff however it has all been removed with the exception of a few vent hoses,,will this cause any issues or is it similar to a car where removing it makes it actually run better and have more power and fuel efficiency??? And even if the charging system is to blame for this should I still spend the money to have the jetting issues looked at.Or would that be a decsion better left til after I resolve that charging issue and see if the problem is corrected by that!! What if any single part of the charging system is kinda famous for going more than others?? Sorry for all the questions all at once but since I lost my job of 16 yrs I may have to try to do all this work myself so I am afraid guys this will probably be only the first of many mechanical threads I send!!!! Hey Doey, I have the same bike and i have had some of the same problems, the charging problem well for me the rectifier sucks, i put one from a gsxr the was bigger but had the same plug, and the three stater wires i replaced the with a larger gage wire soldered and shrink tube them and bought a battery tender and i have had no problems. on the problems in 4th, 5th and 6th well i had the same problem, the bike had set a bit and the sliders in the carbs were sticky so i had to rebuild the carbs, but with out seeing or hearing the bike im not sure about if its the same ? hey and don't be afard to ask a question thats how you learn ..... good luck
