They are very difficult to locate for sure. I have been looking for gen 2 bearings for years and gave up.

^^^^ No fuckin way !!! Who knew?? So our mills can't be rebuilt ?? I'm gonna start looking for that Triumph 3 latest edition Speed Triple 800 is what i'd consider as my VFR replacement, and i'm sorry Honda has abandoned its owners like that. Soichiro-san, PLEASE, it's not right to your spirit that the new crop of businessmen won't support your legacy. Shame is upon their persons and their ancestors !

coleross, your VF is a boat anchor now, and you gots no choice and must needs step up, and that costs money, but look for a nice 4th gen, and you'll never need another motorcycle cuz you got a winner there and you'll finally be riding a thoroughbred, not a weak-kneed mule.

Actually S-men, Soichiro-san started this "build it and abandon it" mentality years ago. The reality is the American bike market is not Honda's focus.

To the OP, you would be suprised at the avalability of bearings. Have you taken a set of veneer calipers to the bearings and see what comes up on SKF's website? Any numbers on the bearings?

It's a cool historic bike from the Honda V4 pioneer era that ended in 1986, something that's good looking, classic, something anyone would want to keep in their garage years after it finally blew up or they decided to find a gen 2, 3, or 4, just like an old friend or stuffed family cat.

If it's MY fragile old ass on the road, i'll ride the best, safest newest technology i can afford !!

If you ride conservatively, VFs are efficient transport (as long as they run) for riders who enjoy mildness and that classic "I wanted that in High School" thing. The R models deliver in bulk what the VFs only promise.

But really, the improvements made over the years mean that the newest bike you can afford is the best bike for you now IF you like to ride.
