Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I a new VF500 owner. I was given two keys, both of which fit in the ignition. Now it's my understanding that this key will fit in the gas cap and the helmet lock as well. Here's a few problems I have.

Problem #1 : The gas cap - key slot has been thoroughly stripped out. I probably could use a screwdriver to get it off.
Problem #2 : The helmet lock - my key won't even fit into it.

I'd like to get some suggestion on how to fix all of this. I know that I can order as new gas cap, but I'd probably have to have it re-keyed. I haven't seen any of the helmet locks available.

Ebay is great if you need a new gas cap.

The key never goes all the way into the helmet lock. If it goes in most of the way, it's normal.

I used a flathead bit in a socket and a socket wrench to remove the old tumblers from my gas cap. Just put the bit in and turn. (which, of course, wrecked the cylinder, but al least I got it out and got the tank open)

Be sure to try both sides of the key. Honda keys can be cut with a different number on each side.

If worse comes to worse you can try some of these options... Go to your local Honda dealer and see if they can cut keys for you. There are codes on the Honda locks and they can use that to cut the correct keys. Call a locksmith. They can usually make keys for you by using an existing lock. Check ebay or a local salvage yard to find a complete set of ignition/tank/helmet locks with a key and replace all of them to a new key.
