Just wanted to ask a few of you guru's about the value of building the 86. My 86 that I have had buried in the basment for a couple years has sparked somthing...dont know what, trying to decide...scrap or build!!!

My question is I know it runs and is bone stock except a yoshi mid-pipe and muffler. It has 38,000 miles on it. It needs pretty much the amount of money dumped into it to repair and upgrade it to my standards that it is worth, providing I do the paint and all labor. 2-2.5K. I dont expect to retire off of selling, more interhested in having another bike to beat on/take to vintage meets. Is it worth building or just scrapping?? I have tried to pass it on for a couple years for 500$ and no luck. I hate to just scrap it. I even had my sis post it here a while back after she wrecked and nothing! I was thinking of building it and bringing it back from the dead. Is the motor good for a few more miles, what should I be on the look-out for as far as problems and signs of wear, Is it worth it???? I know you can damn near throw an f2/3/4 out the back of the truck and still ride em home. Are these motors durable?? Do they take crashes well?? Thanks for any input, I am a kawi guy (750turbo,12R, zx11) and have liked this bike ever since my buddy got it and sold it to my sis (beat on it many times) LOVE that sound!!!!!!!!!

I am searching this site for parts but so far got reply for tank and waiting for all others.

that realy depends on the type of guy you are? I bought my 5th gen as a basket case looking for a project... something to keep me busy on the weekends to tinker with as far as an investment it is for sh#t. I have spent more than 4K in the restoration on a bike that will have a salvage title and resale would be something I dont even want to think about. However resale is not in the plan :) I built this bike to ride and bought it for numerous hours of joy in building and the end product will be much better than the cleanest used bike I could have found. Not to mention there is a satisfaction you get out of taking something that is unwanted and turning it in to something that turns heads everywhere you go. More than likely if you build it you will loose money if and when you sell it but you will gain a great bike and the pride of knowing you did it yourself. Just my 2cents

That's exactly why I just bought my 6yr barn find Suzuki Katana 750 for $500 and a wrecked 04 Ninja zx6r for $50

If you have the want-to, then do it! There's a big difference in pride between buying a bike, and actually buying junk and making it good. Once you're done, you're so much happier with the bike than just buying a ready to ride bike

Im not saying that everyone should do this... for most people that just want to ride, buying a turn key bike in good condition is the way to go. I am just one of those guys that like to tinker and build. I could have bought a a new bike and chose to build my bike partialy because I wanted a mint 5th gen and also because I enjoy such a project. Money does not grow on trees here either but in this case it is cheap entertainment and if I bought a new bike I would be building something else anyways to pass the time :)

Please sir....I need parts bad!!! Let me know what you have when ready. I have a list in a few other threads here.

Oh i hear ya on the build it other then buy it!! I will post some pics of my old bikes I have put together. I dont plan on dumping an assload of cash in it because I got it for CHEAP!!! I am on a budget of 2-2500. I just loved that sound and have been tired of walking around it in the basement for a couple years now. I talked to the wife and dont have a current projest cause I have been busy with customers bikes. I thought what the hell I know it runs great!

LOL......Saddly enough it is damaged. I can cut it off at the collector and salvage most of it with a new can. It will just have an extention welded on the the yosh mid after the damaged part is cut off back by the can.

There will definitely be some parts going up here, but it may be a few weeks. Good chance that a 4 into 1 kerker will be one of them. Once I get my ride resurrected I will help out as many of you bros and hos as possible. I do have a buttload o stuff but have been waiting to get mine road worthy to start parting with any of it. Now tht I have a running ride to get mine raised from the dead it is time.

If you are prepared to deal with problems and lots of downtime and no riding with the bike then by all means!

    Tinker and restore.

    kerker

I ran a kerker back in the day and as long as you get the jetting dialed in(not much work) you are all good. I am sticking with the supertrapps.
