Alright, VFR World, I need your expertise and help... I got my brand new '07 VFR at the end of October. I have put 2400 miles on her, and did the regular check up at 600 miles with a certified Honda dealer. I rode about 45 minutes yesterday with no incident. However, this morning I got her out of the garage, started it up and then made it half way down my street before the engine shut off. I initially thought that this was a battery problem, so I plugged it into the tender for the day. I got home from work, and the battery is at full charge, but the engine still won't turn over. I then thought it might be low fuel, even though I still have an eighth of a tank left, so I put a few gallons in, but got the same result. It is trying to turn over, but just won't engage. Anyone have an idea of what I am dealing with? It ran perfect yesterday, and the weather is 70 degrees today, so that shouldn't be a factor. I am thinking maybe spark plugs, but really that is just an uneducated guess. I did get a light that flashed on when I was trying to start it that read F1 (I think). It only flashed for a second, and I haven't been able to look at the manual yet. Anyways, thanks in advance for any help, thoughts or advise!
Beautiful bike - and 70 degrees in Denver this time of year?!?! You suck! We just had 6 inches of snow, and it was 10 degrees this morning. Anyway, if you sit on the bike (or put it on the centerstand), sidestand up, neutral selected, clutch pulled in, kill switch in the "run" position (you did check that, right? Just checking...), and you try to start it, what happens? I think that would rule out a very unlikely simultaneous failure of the neutral and sidestand safety switches. If it doesn't start, it could still be a bad kill switch. I don't think all of your spark plugs could foul at the same time. [BTW, I think "turning over" is generally accepted to mean that the starter will spin the engine. What you call turning over would be the engine firing and running, if I understand what you're trying to say.] When you turn the key on, normally the red FI light will illuminate for a few seconds and you can hear the fuel pump operating, then the light goes out and the pump stops. You've seen that a bunch of times by now if you've got 2400 miles on it. Are you saying that you also see the red light come on while the starter button is depressed and the engine is turning over? I don't think that's normal. If the fuel pump doesn't stop a few seconds after you turn the key on (runs continuously), or you don't hear it at all, that could mean that it's not getting fuel, or something's wrong with the pump (or a fuse?). It might not get fuel if one of the vacuum lines under the tank came loose and the petcock is not opening. You could prop up the front of the tank and take a look under there. Did some critters make a winter home in there? Do you smell fuel coming out of the exhaust after attempting to start it? That would at least let you know that the fuel injection is trying to do its thing. HTH, Rod
I'm a 'tad' confused by your post. Is the problem your starter won't turn the engine over? If that's the case, start by checking for a loose battery connection...have the battery load tested.
