Idiot with a spanner

    On Saturday I took my VFR on its first long run since I have owned her. After the run I switched off the bike and there was a small puddle of coolant on the floor the guys told me it was just an overflow or something but the after riding back from church on Sunday it happened again.

    It was from the left radiator but most importantly from behind the radiator and for me to get there I had to undo a hose which lead in more coolant being spilt I didn't see anything wrong with the radiator and put it back together the good news is the coolant hasn't leaked since then.

    On my way to work on Monday the bike was idling high 2500 rpm after a 1 km ride, it behaved on my way back home idling at 1500 rpm still high but ok. Did the same thing on Tuesday so I decided to set the idling after riding for 10 min in stop go traffic to warm the bike up the idling was perfect but the bike overheated in my back yard when I was going to park it. This morning I had the same problem with the idling but after I took the bike up to 150 km/h that came back to normal.

    I think I have to burp the system but don't know how to (out of cap can't download service manual) but I don’t think that will help with the idling.

    Can you guys think of anything I can do to fix my bike? Please I am desperate to go on another long ride this weekend.

    drain all radiator fluid and replace.. start it give it gas to see fluid pulled down into radiator that way you know pump is working. may also disassssssemble and check water pump.some people may claim its oil temperature but not sure how that would work in this situation.... is your throttle cable being pinched??? and i am to assume this is a 6th gen?? is throttle sprining back?? vacum in airbox in?hose off the can??i would go over whole bike take off fairings and check.....good luck

    It is a 6th gen, 2005. The throttle jumps back fine. I will start the stripping as soon as I get home from work.

    I took off the fairings to burp the system got the air bleed hose off the radiator, didn't notice the coolent level drop after I gave it a few good revs(the bike was at 70 degrees celcuis). I left the motorbike to idle untill the fan kicked. I was watching the temp and it wasn't kicking in I let the bike get to 120 degrees celcuis wich is just before overheating and still nothing.

    Can you please give me a lists of what is wrong and directions on how to burp the bike properly.

    Put the bike on the sidestand, take off the radiator cap (engine cool) then top up the radiator at the cap. Squeeze the front hoses to dislodge any air that may be trapped, then top it up again. start the engine with the cap off and let it idle till it warms up, and observe if any air bubbles come out, and top it up again if necessary.
    Some coolant may overflow due to expansion. dont get it on the paint, rinse it off.
    When the engine gets over 82deg, you should see the coolant circulating due to the thermostat being open and the pump pumping it around.
    put the radiator cap on and check the level in the reservoir is up to the full mark.
    You should have no trouble after this, the main thing is use the side stand which puts the radiator cap at a high point.
