Hey guys, I just joined up to VFR world and have a burning question you guys have probably heard a zillion times. I want a VFR for certain, but I don't know what one I want.

I am currently riding a ZZR600 to destruction and have about 20k miles under my belt in the last 9 months of riding (commuting, touring and plenty of joyriding).

A VFR has always been my dream bike but I could not afford one at the time so I bought the ZZR for £1000 (which was a ripoff for the condition).

I love the look of the VFR 400 and it is pretty good on fuel economy and insurance too. This is my favourite of the couple. However, I am 6ft 0 and I think I may be a rather cramped on the thing. Also, Do you think it will feel pretty slow as I am used to 100bhp and I tend to put the ZZR through its paces on the straights and corners. (Plenty of foot pegs scraping) The 400 was the bike that really got me into VFR's and I think I'd enjoy this one the most. Not seen one of these in person but the CBR 400 seems absolutely tiny.

I like the square-y look of the 750 but I am not a massive fan of the front lights and windshield. However, I know the 750 has plenty of power. I am not sure what it is like around the corners. Another bonus as they go rather cheap in good condition in the UK as there are plenty around. There is a rather nice one on sale nearby and i thought it felt amazing to sit on.

I think the older 800 looks pretty cool but it does not appeal to me as much as the other VFR's and it seems it would be less fun to me. I have not had the chance to sit on one of these, nor ride one.

Finally. the VTEC. I am a massive fan of VTEC engines and the combination of that with a VFR really rustles my jimmy's. XD However, my local mechanic has told me of plenty of horror stories about these being unreliable and I would struggle to be able to afford one of these as my budget is around £2500. I also love the way these look and they feel very similar to my ZZR to sit on.

A lot of text there, but they're my thoughts. :p Lemme know what you guys think is best for me? I'm thinking the 400 or RVF 400 if I can find one. I just don't know if I could fit one or and could deal with the less power.

    Cheers,

    Andy

I would recommend the 5th or 6th gen
Not sure if your mechanic smoke some good Turkish shit.
Many of us have put in over 100k mileage on our bikes and have no major issue.
Google the Internet there is a Briton delivery man put in over 800k miles on his Vfr

I guess he just got a particularly knackered VFR to work on many times. It seemed unusual of him to say that about a Honda. He claimed it was "Overly engineered".

He's talking out of his arse. The Gen 6 VFR is probably the most reliable of the lot!

Fair enough! As I mentioned earlier, the 400 appeals to me most. How does the power feel compared to a 600 and do you think it is rideable as someone who is 6ft?

The 400 will get you around for sure but the 800 will get you more when you need it.

The 400 is a classic, to be sure...but you'll hate being cramped on it and you will definitely find it underpowered. It's a great "second" bike, one to buy and do up with all the trick accessories and a nice paint job, for those special occasions when you're going on a relatively short ride with your mates. I really don't recommend it as a primary ride.

He's probably spot on here, they're engineered to last a long time. 90K miles on my '99. I won't debate the '98-'01(5th gen) vs. '02-up(6th gen), both are great. Your budget would get a nice 5th or an earlier 6th in the states, no idea about the UK market but good luck. I'd look for either that has been well taken care of and less than 40-50K on the odo.

Your mechanic should learn proper English so that there is no misinterpretation. Either that or go back to drawing pictures with crayons. My 06 has over 100K miles (163K km) and really has not been much of a problem, over and above what you should expect on long hard hot rides. I burned the stator last spring but that was while on a 5 week 7000 mile trip. It doesn't own me anything.

I have a 1982 cb750k and a 1998 5 gen 800 and the vfr is a blast to ride it can run circles around my 750 and my daughters 2012 ninja 650. I think your mechanic doesn't want you to buy a honda because he could go out of buisness waiting for you to break down, don't listen to him he's thinking $$$ and what's going to make him the most money.
