How is VTEC actuated?

Hi all. I have heard many references to the different VTEC engagement points of 02-05 and 06-07 models. I appears that Honda reduced the engagement RPM from approx 7000 to 6400, and the disengagement RPM to 6100...

    My question is this:

What kind of system controls the VTEC actuation point? Is it done electronically, or mechanically/hydraulically?

And if it is done electronically, what is to stop someone putting an 06 ECU in an 05 bike?

    Thanks

As an overview, the ECU tells a solenoid to allow oil to flow to a spool valve which actuates your extra valves. So, I guess you could switch ECU's. However, I’m not sure if anything else changed and there’s the cost of an ECU itself. I’m not sure you would notice all that much difference unless your bike had a very abrupt engagement. Mine seems pretty smooth and it feels like it gets even better with the more miles you put on it. Of course it might be you just get used to your own bike.

I can't give you an exact mechanical engineering answer but from what I understand it's a combination of the ECM which translate into mechanical activation in the end. Oil pressure is used to lock a pin which activates the other cam profile.

Do a google search, there are many people who have asked the same question.

Thanks for the replies, it's not worth changing the ECU then. Probably go the PCIII route.
