Welcome to VFRing Argyllvfr. I have never been to Scotland but always wanted to go especially on a motorcycle. Most of my family were kicked out during the clearances and the rest left sometime in the early 1900s. They trickled down to Texas from Canada. I can't tell you why. Maybe that got cold and longed for hot barren grass land. My mom's extended family came from Arran. She and my dad went on holiday, thought it was beautiful and granted that living there could be hard if your choices were sheep wrangling on rented land or fishing.

It seems as if the native Scots take delight in being understood only amongst themselves.

So you have both the VFR and the CBR?

Arrans just down the road too.Not much on the isle to be honest. There's a marine conservation area around it do you cant fish it anymore. Or even dropping anchor is a no no.
Unfortunately I sold my cbr a few years ago. I regretted it the day after..
I only bought the vfr last week. Went all the way up to Tain in the highlands for her. Been looked after

No not much on the isle except pretty views on nice days. My parents did bring me back a bottle of fine Scotch whisky. That was over 20 years ago and I still have it. Been saving it for a special event (wedding, birth) that just never happened.

Years ago I had a friend from Tain. She would regal me with stories of her brother's and her father's hatred of "the English." It reminded me of the folks here, in the deep south, that are still fighting the civil war.

    Welcome Argyllvfr,

That's a nice bike. That dark blue metallic is gorgeous. I always think of it as midnight blue, not sure what the official name is. I remember once lying on a road on a steep, tight hairpin bend on the Isle of Man looking up at an Aston Martin Vantage that color and being very impressed with the paint, shimmering in the sunshine. It looked so magnificent that for a minute I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The driver glanced regally down at the grubby, bloody cyclist still tangled up in his bike lying half conscious in the road and steered carefully around me and continued down the hill. One mustn't get too soft with the peasants after all. The next car round the corner a few minutes later was an Irish tourist in a beige mini metro and he did stop and scrape me off the road.

I grew up in Edinburgh and my mother's family were from Isla. I love the west coast, stunning country at least it is when you can see it :)
For some reason we used to mainly go west for family holidays most years. Lots of happy memories. Sandy Hills Bay on the Solway Firth was a frequent destination, but Skye, Ghia and Iona popped up pretty frequently too so I have stopped in Oban a few times. I emmigrated in 86 as there weren't really a lot in the way of jobs around when I left school. I still get back every few years though.

    Slanje,

Welcome laddy. I took the wife over to the UK a few years ago as a wedding anniversary gift. We toured a lot of it including some Scotland, mostly the east in Edinburgh. My ancestry comes from Glasgow. Descendants from the Clan Fraser. I am a second gen Canuck. If it weren't for the Scotts and Irish, Canada would never have been developed past Toronto. The English and French were afraid of the great lakes and rocky terrain of Ontario, the swamps and huge fucking mosquitoes of Manitoba, blistering hot flat land of Saskatchewan, the raging bison of Alberta and then there is BC. Them huge guddam mountains to cross. Yup, the Scots and Irish pushed through along with a few from Germany. Most of them stayed in Winnipeg though.

I saw some glorious roads and scenery up in Scotland and recall being oh so sad I did not have my VFR with me.

Nothing as refreshing as an ice cold India Pale Ale for sure. I think we tend to enjoy ours a little colder than what you do over there. But there is nothing finer than a good 20 or so year old single malt. I remember staying at some little village somewhere in Scotland where we had a traditional haggis supper. Went into the bar and had a shot of Lagavulin 12 year old. I asked for a little ice. The bar keep looked at me like I was a terrorist and gave me one of those round ice cubes with the hole in the middle. It melted before it hit the spirit. Funny experience that was. But now I have mine neat as often as on the rocks.

You should try to get over this way sometime. You people from the UK are usually astounded by the vastness of Canada. I would love to take a few of you on a few day trip around British Columbia on bikes and see the splendor of the Rockies.
