HELP newbie here. bought a 1984 vf1000 cheap in nice shape with a friend, he let the neighbor kid ride it before i had a chance to check it over, came home with severe asymetric knock. Oil light came on during ride, shut down hauled home. 1 1/2 quarts low on oil, filled it level, no oil light. seems to run decent. what gives? if this thing is toast, do i fix or find a used motor, and where?
    thanks vfr world.

If the knock and oil light are gone, you may have gotten off lucky...

You can check the oil pressure, but I'd probably just ride it and keep a wary ear out for that knock for a while. Old VF's are very sensitive to oiling (or lack of) issues.

The knock could have been in the top end or bottom end. Either is bad.

If you're really lucky there's no damage, but most likely it cut some life off the engine at least.

If you're really wanting to check things out, you could pull the covers and check out the cams for damage as that's the most sensitive area on the VF series for oiling deficiencies....

Got it GW, thanks. the knock sounds like a intermittant hammering in jug or higher. no symmetry to knock. possible carbon deposit, piston hitting valve? could be peice of piston bouncing around in cylinder. Local genius checking to isolate which cylinder. Oil pressure fine now, but with low oil anything could have happened. what exactly are the valvetrain issues i have read about?

    Hey

It is bad to loose oil pressure, but maybe you were lucky. This is what I have learned:the oil pressure switch mesures the oil pressure from the main- and rod bearings (high pressure area). For how long did you ride from the oil light came on and to you shut off the engine.10-20 sek you should be okay 5-10 min uffff not good. Here what you do.Take the oil pan down have a look at the bottom for metal chips also take your oil filter and cut it open (with something that doesn´t make a mess fx can opener). Also do what Great white told you open the top.P.S is there any sound (rattle, grinding or knocking) from it now.

    Best regards

    Gunnar

I'm goning to go with - bad. Any knock due to oil starvation probably means rod bearings. With oil in there it's now got some cushion, but that won't last long.

The bummer is - you can't get bearings anymore.
