Hello, i am new here to the site and let me start by saying i really love it so far. but i need HELP!!!! any help you all can give would be appreciated. I bought my 1987 VFR700F2 about 6 years ago. I was a little younger when i got it, and did not know the diamond in the rough i had. I was just happy to get a motorcycle. Well i took a really bad fall on it about 4 years ago. I had planned to sell it but decided that i would try to rebuild it. Now just a little history on me..i am not the most mechanically inclined person in the world. i can read a book and follow directions really well. So i am using clymers to take it apart and rebuild. I was wondering what should my next steps be...should i rebuild the engine due to the fall and 4 years in the backyard? I plan to do a 520 chain conversion, 1994 Cbr Front and Rear end Change, and 4-2-1 exhaust change, new fairings all around, new EBC rotors, calipers, and brake pad upgrade, and various other changes or modifications...Side note..i had a bad wheelie and the bike slide about 4 car lengths and basically ripped the whole right side off. So i was not able to restart the engine because the start button WAS on the right handlebar. i guess my overall question for now is what should do with the engine since it has been sitting up for so long?

Take out the spark plugs and fog Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders - barring Marvel Mystery oil, use kerosene. Wait 3 days and take off the alternator cover and crank by hand - make sure you go counter-clockwise. If you can't crank by hand - spray some more in and wait. If you still can't - you probably have other issues.

Once the engine spins freely for at least 4 rotations - start it up and stand back - because the smoke is going to be intense. Once running well - replace the oil.

Note: Did you drain the carbs when it sat - if not, they need a good (carb cleaner dip) cleaning. Also make sure your petcock and gas tank are not too rusty.

Check your tires (over 5 years old get replaced), replace all fluids and filters, make sure brakes work.
