:caked: Hello, my name is Jerome Johnson. I live in Austin Texas. I work as a Special Education High School Teacher. I am a prior service vet, from the Viet Nam era. I own a 1986 700 VFR and have been riding it for the past 19 years. I purchased it used from my brother and tried to repaire it as I have driven it all these years. I want to restore the bike, but I sometimes feel that I will invest way to much money into the bike. I am 51, and enjoy riding when I get the chance. Welcome JJ. As far as restoration on the 86 VFR I would say that unless you have sentimental reasons to restore it, dont. You will have more into it than you could ever get out of it. However if all the bodywork is good and straight and just needs new hoses, fluids, shocks....then you might be ok. A nicer bike for the money is the 94-97 that can be had for 1500.00 up to 4500.00. The parts for these known as the GEN 4 are still around and alot of used parts too. Glad to have you here and see you around!
Welcome to the club! We are right about the same age, and I also have an older Honda ('83 CB1100F) that has been with me for about 20 years. I know what you mean about the restoration cost. I figure I've got about 4000, give or take, into repairs and parts, and if I invest about another 2000, it should be worth at least 2200. But it is an old friend, so maybe one day...
