I recently acquired a 1986 VFR700 and man am I excited to actually get it on the road. I'm not one to go out and pay someone else several hundred to a thousand dollars just to get my bike running, when I can do it myself for super cheap and learn a lot in the process. I enjoy being self-sufficient in SOME areas of my life. Anywho, I'm not new to bikes or wrenches, but I have hit a couple snags. Through the help of my cousin and the Clymer, I've been able to tackle most of the issues thus far. Bike sat for 12 years and was only fired up a handful of times through those years. Needless to say there were a lot of things locked up. All fresh fluids and massive cleaning of gunk. Carbs removed and cleaned as best I could. I think I'm realistically 1-2 days away from it being road-worthy, but I have run into 1-2 more problems that I could use some help with... electrical issues. 1) Fuel pump was not working. Took it apart. contacts required massive cleaning. In the process I broke a ground wire. Getting that re-soldered by my neighbor today, then going to test it. That issue will hopefully be resolved this afternoon. 2) Bike won't shift into gear. She'll start in neutral and run so long as i pour fuel in (remember the pump is out right now), but when I shift into first, she jumps and stalls. My neighbor is also coming over this afternoon with his multimeter to check power and continuity but I wanted to possibly narrow down the issue if at all possible. I have read through so many posts and found that it could be "neutral safety switch, safety switch (on the clutch lever), or the clutch diode". I couldn't find any post that matched my symptoms to a T, so I was hoping to get some direction here. Once again, I tried to earnestly look through the posts and use the search bar to sift through the other threads, but no luck in finding what I needed. Help? Broken-hearted in Bloomington
