Started it up this morning and noticed the headlight is out. Sucks cause i had to take the truck into work:sour:

Pulled the bulb to check numbers and it looked good. Hooked it directly to a battery and it worked. Pulled out the volt meter and not getting power to the light. Fuse looks good. Downloaded the wiring diagram (for a 750 but should be the same?) Boy that thing is hard to read. I'll check tomorrow if i'm getting power to the fuse.

IDK too tired to think right now.

Starter button isn't returning fully out. Common problem, 1st gen buttons were weak, broke tabs, and melted down. You can try wiggling the start button as a temp fix but you may want to upgrade the controls to a newer gen VFR for a better button.

Or just a bad connection on the bulb pins. I ended up rearing down the front end of my FJR hunting for the headlight relay when all it was was corrosion/oxidation on the connection pins. Both headlights were affected which is what really threw me.

    Posted in 1st gen VF

It's always the starter button. Headlight circuit runs through the normally closed side of the start button. Lights go out when button is pressed so maximum power from battery is available for cranking. The switch is a POS and frequent failure point.

    Haha...Thanks Tinker.
Before going to bed last night I read that on some motorcycles the starter button turns off the headlight (or something like that) when pushed. Talked to a mechanic friend that didn't think so is the only reason that i didn't open it up last night.

When the bike was running and I noticed the headlight was out i turned it off then turned the key back on. Bike tried to start up on it's own. I did see the button stuck on and not returning correctly after a few uneasy seconds.
I'll open it up and see what it looks like then search around for upgrade or easy fix.

Sorry i didn't search better before posting. Had no idea it was a common problem. I was just ranting i wanted to RIDE, LOL.
    Thanks again.

Maybe you can be the first guy to 3D print a replacement button?

    Quick update
Ordered a "90-93 HONDA VFR750F RC36 VFR750 VFR 750 RIGHT HANDLEBAR SWITCH START STOP" because it was only $24 including shipping.
The wires are the same but about 8inches short. Also the locator tab doesn't line up.

I think because of the money issue i'm going to try and make this one work. I'll take it into work and either lenghen the wires or just unsolder and swap wires. Also either grind off or drill another hole in the handle bars. Otherwise i'm happy with the paddle start button.

*will update again when finished "here" so as not to bump this thread. Thanks
-Picture of the different wires..bad picture

Had some funky leftover connectors at work I wanted to try so cut both wires and spliced the old plug onto the new controller for the length i needed. If i was to do it over i would definitely re-solder instead of splicing. (Hell if i have problems i can still do that).

Everything hooked back up nicely and the bike fires off great. Now the only problem is the brake light doesn't activate from the front lever. Pretty sure it's from corroded contacts on the spade connectors coming from the switch itself. Trying to get to the store for contact cleaner and some grease to throw in there.

Lastly i've never started the bike with the seat off. There is some strong thumping noise/vibration coming from two black boxes(?) right under the seat. Don't have a clue what they are for. Guess i'll have to take a picture.
