    Hello everyone,

    What was the last year for the gear-driven cams? 1998? Is there a year where fuel injection and gear-driven cams live side by side?

    All IMHO.....
    I said it before, I'll say it again.
    The holy grail of VFR is the 5th generation.
    EFI + gear driven cams. It peaked there.
    My 4th gen is second seat.
    VTEC just added complexity at the expense of the very different and very bulletproof gear drive cam.

    I love the sound of gear driven cams. And, although I haven't had any problems with Cam chain tensioners on my Vtec, wish my bike had gear driven cams. I would not trade my bike for a 5th gen though, I am very happy with my bike, overall. I even like the Vtec. I just do appreciate some of the finer points of certain previous generations.

    I wonder if you can put a 99 engine in a vtech frame, dimensionally the engine should be the same and I would suspect that the mount points would also be the same.

    Motor would likely swap fine. Would the later model computer and electrics be able to run a non VTEC engine though??

    yep I agree the bulletproof valve train provided by those gear driven cams cannot be topped, latest VFR's lost that heritage :( and gained VTEC :( which is only for emissions so it can run lean at low rpm (I've had to explain that to sooOOooo many people)

    If I get a new(er) one it'll be a 00-01 forrr surrre

    Having some experience with Honda and motorcycle engine management systems, I HIGHLY doubt that the VTEC and 5th gen are interchangeable. We build a little racecar in the engineering department at school and we swapped an F4i 600cc for an RR 600cc and the engine mounts are completely different. I know a VFR isn't a 600 but when Honda redesigns they usually change stuff like that. Even if the engine mounts did line up you would have to keep the proper ECU's with the proper engine because I guarantee the engine mapping is different.
    I haven't researched how the VTEC works but I doubt the ECU has anything with the valves opening, but the mapping probably gets different at 6000rpm
    Just my .02! I could be way off!

    One thing I never hear anyone mention amidst all the ragging on the V-Tec engine is that it is smooth. I have let several friends try my '06 VFR and the first thing every one of them says when they get off the bike is, "Wow, I can't believe how smooth that bike is." This I think is one of the beautiful things about the V-Tec engine. When running below V-Tec levels there is almost no vibration. Seeing that the bike is classified as a sport touring bike and not just a sport bike, I think that this is a big deal. Less vibration = more comfortable ride over long distances. Is this not the reason BMW uses boxer engines?
