Funny engine noise

I own a 2007 Interceptor (VFR800) with 15,000 miles on it. The bike has FMF aftermarket exhaust and a K&N air filter. The bike has never been crashed and in general the bike runs/rides fine. However, the other day I noticed a detonation-like sound each time that I get off the throttle. During full throttle, partial throttle, or sustained throttle there is no sound of detonation ... only when I get off the throttle while at speeds above 30 or so mph.

Thinking that I might have gotten a bad load of fuel, I filled up with a fresh tank of super unleaded ... but the sound persists. Although hard to pinpoint the location of the sound while riding, it seems to be (just a guess) coming from the forward cylinder area near the front tire. Again, it seems very odd to have off-throttle detonation so I am left scratching my head.

Does anyone know what the sound is?

If not detonation, what could it be?

 

Do you think it may be a loose cam chain rattleing around? Seems like the cam chain tensioners are a common failing point on the sixth gen. Look on utube for vfr cam chain noise and see if it sounds similar. Only thing I could think of that would make a noise on decel and would be an easy fix.

 

It is not a cam chain tensioner. I have had two identical 2007 VFR800s and both bikes had both (front and rear) cam chain tensioners go out after 10,000 miles ... that's a total of FOUR f-ing tensioners that I have had to replace. The sound of a faulty tensioner is much different (kind sounds like a rod bearing going out on a car) and only happens at low rpm (especially when the engine is cold). In addition, both bikes had the stator go out at 6,000 miles!

Again, this is a tink-tinkity sound like detonation that only occurs when coming off throttle when riding above 50 mph. (Update, my first post said 30 mph but on my ride home I really paid attention and noticed that it is above 50 mph).

Another update is that my bike mileage is 15,750 ... a scant few miles before the first scheduled valve adjustment.

Anyone have any insight as to the noise?

 

This is might be same the case with 07VFR experiencing no one can fix the noise so he sold the bike and get the 5th gen.......You sure the noise came from the engine perhaps your valves in need of adjustment premature :noidea:

 

Wow. That's a lot of bad luck with '07 VFR's! I've only had three problems with over 25k miles on my '05 - coupling on speed sensor replaced, bike wouldn't run but got resolved with wiring recall, and stator plug beginning to melt at 25k miles. Sorry, if it was electrical I could figure it out but I don't know mechanical troubleshooting very much.
