After my 1998 vfr just lost all power after years of faultless riding pleasure I was at a loss as to what the problem could be. After trawling through many threads on here and studying my Haynes manuel I narrowed it down to what I thought to be the fuel cut off relay. After testing it with an ohm meter and getting constant readings I decided to buy a new one anyway just to eliminate that factor. I tested the fuel pump and all was fine. Replaced the fuel pump fuse and the bike fired first time, BUT as I was looking around before I put the bike back together I saw a little puff of smoke from behind the reg-rec unit. I poked a finger down onto the wiring loom which goes to the ECU and the bike died again. Hey presto I found the fault. It was the black and white dotted cable had a nick and was shorting out on the nut which secures the reg-rec to the sub-frame. Hope this helps others as it took me 5 evenings and £50 to sort.
