just noticed some "blowing" from around the front left cylinder exhaust header pipe - close to where the exhaust connects to the engine. Is it safe just to try tightening the bolts that appear to hold the collar? The book says they are only 9 ft lbs and I don't want to overdo it, or should I get a new copper gasket anyway..... and if I take it apart will I need a new gasket for where it connects to the rest of the exhaust. Sorry for the dumb questions.

Get a new gasket. They are not really gaskets, but rings that crush into shape on tightening, not really made to re-use. Only a couple bucks.
