Front brakes locked up.

I purchased a replacement master cylinder my old one had road rash from sliding in an accident. Brakes worked fine before (little spongy). On my test ride my brakes slowly became tighter and tighter during use of brake, until they locked up. I took out the piston and the spring was broken. I am soaking my reservoir starting to get all the brown build up out of it.
Can I use the piston and spring and boots from my old master cylinder? If it is installed right then there should be a need to buy a rebuild kit, right?
Do you think this will resolve my issue?
Is there anything else I need to do to the brakes to get them operational?
