i bought an 85 vf500f this spring and put 400 miles on it so far. after changing the oil for the first time in i dont know how long(probably a years). i am wondering about switching to synthetic is this a good idea or not? i dont have a owners manual but the mechanic said to but in 15W40 is that right? i put in a Wix filter. does anyone recommend synthetic?

another thing: gas i read that the interceptors dont require a non-oxygenated fuel 91-93 octane, but 87 octane has ethenol in it which is hard on and is hard on rubber. what do u reccomend i should about gas

If you can afford the full synthetic I would go that way. on the matter of fuel that again depends on the budget, most of the older VFs ran fine on regular but for me topping off with super was worth it to me and it still is today even though gas prices are like ... Wow!

Avoid the ethanol if at all possible.

Heard mixed results on fully synthetic. Try a blend maybe.

I wouldn't go synth. Ask any honda Machanic and he will tell you not to unless you are going to push your bike to the extreme like a track bike. Syn. will cause cluch problems in a vfr.

    Hi,
A Very Good Oil For My Vfr 750 ('87) Is Repsol (synthetic 15-40).less Engine Noise And Good Protection. No Problem With Any Type Of Gasoline If Carburettors And Spark Plugs Are Ok.
    Lamps To All Vfr Owners...
P.s. It Seems No More Troubles With The Site....

I was told to use 10w40 oil.

So in my 86 VF500 I'm using 10w40 Semi-Synthetic Oil. I think the Oil brand is Motul IIRC.

I put Sunoco 94 Octane in the Bike....it's the highest at the pump. It may not need it...but it's not hurting it either.

What wrong with Ethanol? Isn't it a good cleaner?

On that old bike I would go to a synth dino blend. The thing with full synth is that if there is a potential oil leak, synth will find it.

OH MY LORD, ANOTHER OIL THREAD!! :behindsofa:

Everybody has a opinion about oil. Main things to remember are: To make sure it is wet-clutch safe, use a reputable name brand, change it on a regular basis (along with the filter), and all will be well. As long as the synthetic is wet-clutch safe (a motorcycle brand synthetic is a good choice) your clutch will be just fine. I would probably just use a quality dino (like 10w-40) and change it on a regular basis.

Hard to get away from ethanol these days, as 99% of the pumps that I use have it down here in SD. I would just fill her up, and not worry about it. Run Seafoam thru her once in awhile, and be happy.

You could see if the owner's manual mentions anything about ethanol or other oxygenates such as MTBE, but on an '85 maybe it doesn't say anything about it. If you have the option of buying gasoline without ethanol it could be a better choice though it seems many vehicles are ok on up to 10% ethanol. Most areas though now you don't have a choice (in any octane level, except maybe racing or farm fuel), esp since the MTBE phase out. One issue some boaters had was fiberglass fuel tanks didn't take to well to the ethanol.

sorry for the oil thread, dang new guys. well heres what i got. most say a syn blend for the oil, but i did some thinking heres what i got: if its not broken, dont fix it!

As for the gas i just put in 1.5 gallons of 87 with the approximately 2-2.5 of 92 in the tank and hate it already!! ive only gone 40 miles and am wishing i wouldnt have done it at all. i added a little seafoam to it in hopes to help the seamingly doggy V4. wont do that again!!

Gas: I run any(87, 93) through not issue. We do have ethanol in hte gas here. For what you are experiencing now. Just put some Stabil or STP in the tank.

Oil: I run full syn. like stuka said, everyone has an opinion. In my bike the way I ride full syn gives me what I am looking for. I second his comment about making sure it is wet clutch safe.

You didn't ask about oil filters. HEHEHhhe
