Hey guys this is my first post. I've had my 2002 VFR 13k miles for about 4 months now and finally want to figure out some stuff. My first concern is that the clutch lever is very difficult to pull. after like 30 min of traffic my hand starts to hurt. Another thing i want to find out is when the temp. reached 220 the fan on the left side kicks in. Is there a fan on the right side because i do not feel anything on the right side radiator. Also when the left fan turns on it is pretty loud and you can hear a lot of buzzing and it gets kind of annoying, just wondering if this is all normal. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!

My first concern would be that your hand needs strengthening. It is fairly common for riders to get a cramped hand in stop 'n go heavy traffic. Do you ride in heavily congested stop 'n go traffic? Either way, you might want to consider some hand exercises to strengthen the muscles if your hand gets fatigued after 30 mins. I can understand it being tired after 30 minutes of stopping and going, but not for just light traffic.

The VFR only has a fan on the left side radiator. It is common for our bikes to get over 220F in traffic. As long as the thermostat & fan are working (and you have good coolant/water mix ratio) it should never overheat. It will get damn hot, but not overheat. The fan noise is audible/noticeable when it turns on. I would have to hear yours to know if something is amiss, but I would bet that all is well. Fans make noise on bikes, especially the closer they are to you.

Next to where the clutch lever is, there is a small wheel...this is the lever adjuster. However it's a hydraulic clutch and not a lot of adjustment....my advice is start strengthing your hand.

The fan noise is normal, and no there is not a fan on the right side.

Thanks for the quick responses. I don't think the problem is with my hand. My friend has a bandit1200s and he also has hydraulic clutch. His clutch is so much easier to pull. Here are some more details about my clutch. When i am in first gear and just pull the clutch there is a kind of slight buzzing and a little vibration. When i put it in neutral the buzzing and vibrations go away. Do you think there is something wrong with my clutch or is all this normal?

    Bure,

I would have to hear it in person to tell probably. If you unfamiliar with your bike's mechanics, you might want to take it down to a reputable (if there is such a thing) dealer for their mechanic to take a look at.

Food for thought, your bike will always idle smoother and have less buzz when it is in neutral. Maybe the buzz could be something else like a loose bolt or something as well. Have someone sit on it and pull in the clutch and put it in gear while you kneel down by the clutch to see if they can hear any odd noises.

Maybe something else on here can chime in with more details on a 6th gen's clutch characteristics. Not really sure here.

It might be worth removing the clutch lever and greasing the pivot bolt, and the lever where it contacts the master cylinder piston. If that helps, I'd do the same on the front brake lever.

The wheel adjustment helped me on my 6th gen. My hand used to cramp a lot in traffic, but shortening the throw on the clutch lever has helped a lot.

I can't help but take notice of all the advice for hand strengthening. How is this not generating thousands of jokes?
