Hi guys, Just bought my first vfr (2001 fi), after many years dreaming of one! Got her for a steal as some bits of tidying up required, however, can't get her fired up, the fi light comes on and stays on! This is the first bike i've had with an ecu, so a little apprehensive about poking around too much. I'm waiting on the haynes manual coming before going much further, but just wondered if anyone out there has encountered this? Any feedback from a seasoned vfr nut would be very much appreciated
Hi Russ, I'm in Scotland too by the way! No i haven't got to the bottom of this yet i'm afraid. I'm gonna have a good diagnostic over the next couple of weeks( with some mates' help), and hopefully get somewhere soon. I'll keep you posted. So far all i've done is check the fuses, oil levels and the old classic......made sure she's got petrol! i'd just wondered if this rang any bells with some experienced vfr guys who'd encountered, and crucially, sorted this out, before i go hacking at things needlessly. Any suggestions still very welcome. in the meantime, thanks for your correspondence mate
Firstly welcome to the MadHouse and in time honoured fashion the folks on here really like to see at least one picture of your new ride.... As for the FI light being lit constantly -the book says - FI light constantly lit = short circuit in FI warning light wiring or faulty ECM The video below may give you some hints - (the list of error codes appears about 5 minutes in) Reading Fuel Injection Error codes on a VFR800 - YouTube I would start by doing a clear FI codes - as per the video - in case its down to something ancient and has since been fixed. If you are lucky pulling the fairing will reveal its just down to a loose connection to the ECU. A new ECU will be expensive so I would get a dealer to check the unit before swapping it out - especially if the bike is running fine. Good luck - let us know how you get on. SkiMad
When you turn the key do you hear the fuel pump "wind up"? Is the kill switch on the right handlebar engaged? Also, there is a fuel pump relay located on the right side of the tail section under the plastics that can go bad. It is a super simple fix that costs less than 100 bucks(USD). Good luck.
hi guys, thanks for the pointers! will be checking all this out asap. ta much to skimad for the post. i'll forward a pic asap and hopefully be on the mend. cheers
Hello Kiranoo, What's the latest with your find? I am having the same issue. Would love to hear what you have tries and hopefully worked.
hi daqangel, this might not be of any use to you, or anyone else, but it's worth posting in case anyone has something similar. after hitting brick walls with everything i tried( battery, fuel system, spark plug, ecm), i found a little black wire under the fuel tank.....this turned out to be the negative feed for the dynojet power commander( which came with the bike). I had traced some snipped wires from the battery and found them to be off an old alarm, i've then wrongly assumed a snipped negative at battery to be the same! After discovering the fault i simply reconnected the negative feed to the power commander, and away she went! I can only assume the previous owner snipped the wrong cable when taking out his alarm. Other than the few things i've tried above, i was coming to bang my head off a brick wall.......might be worth checking some of them out......a few posts back skimad4x4 gave me a cracking link to a you tube clip on fi codes....really worth a look even if it doesn't bear fruit.....best wishes with your diagnosis, let me know how it goes and i hope this helps
