I just picked up some aluminum colored high temp paint for my bike so this exhaust doesnt rot out on me. I was wondering if anyone has painted over thier pipes and could I skate by without a primer by stacking multiple light layers of paint?

No you don't need primer. Paint should be rated for about 1000-1200 degrees works the best and last the longest. If it's not that high of a temp exhaust paint it won't last past the summer. Steel wool the pipes before painting. Make sure they are clean for better adhesion.

ok thank you I deff got high temp paint by VHT i think is the name says its rated from 1300-2k. I figured it had to be high temp primier also but if you think/know I can skate by with just layering the paint then excellent less money I need to spend and ty for the info

After the pipes are cleaned up with steel wool and before spraying, wash them off with detergent and water or wipe them down with a solvent. Off the shelf steel wool is oiled.

If there is any oxidation (rust) give it a bunch of attention, even to the point of some wire wheel work.

    Also, RTFC ;)

got them all painted up when i get my gaskets in next week I will let you know how it holds up. If i did a good enough clean up job and did the coats thin enough for them to dry inbetween it should hold up to 2k degrees lol lets see if it does I will post some pics when the last coat drys out

Anybody that needs something like pink headers or pipes should check out Flame Control Coatings from Sherwin-Williams. Don't tell the harleydoods about this. They will all have to have pink pipes.
