I have a 95` VFR 750 with some electrical issues. It was sitting in the previous owner's garage for about 2 years without being started. I rebuilt carbs, changed fluids, etc. to get it running; but now I'm having this electrical issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Symptoms are that the battery isn't charging well, although it does appear to be charging sometimes, and the negative battery terminal is getting really hot when the bike is running. I think the issue is probably a bad regulator/rectifier, but I wanted to get an outside opinion before I start tearing things apart again. I hope it's not a bad stator, but that's probably a possibility also. The bike is stock, no after market parts or modifications.

    Thanks,
    Kelly Shutt

If your negative battery cable is getting hot, I would check that it is properly grounded to the frame. I would check that it is both tight and rust free first.

Every motorcycle needs a battery charger as part of its toolkit.

the Honda service manual clearly outlines testing procedures for various components of the electrical system and will help locate your problem........IF you have a volt/ohm meter.

battery will DIScharge at idle and not charge much below about 3000 rpm

also, any bike stored that long should be examined carefully for rodent-bitten wiring
