    Hello,
I Need some help to figure this out. I am new to the site having just purchased a brand new 2007 25th Anniversary Edition VFR800 w/ ABS, I have done some mods already, lowering kit, Zero Gravity wind screen, Heli Bars, fender eliminator, TPO kit, and put in the resistors for the O2 sensors. I would like to replace the cat exhaust with an earlier version. I have read that the headers are interchangeable, but the down pipes are routed differently in the header. I have searched the site and found no reference to the differences between the 1998 to 2001 and the 2002 to 2009 down pipes.
    Is there a performance difference?
I know I would have to add a holder for the center stand bumper or remove the center stand. Would do the later, and find a rear stand for chain maintenance and such.
Tried to attach drawing, for what it is worth.......

I believe the '98-'01 pipes are larger diameter, you need to replace the whole set, the rear downpipes along with the front header. The '00-'01 has a cat so you'll want the '98 or '99 set.

I have never read about issues with routing/clearance problems.

uhhhh the header is the front half of the pipe from the cylinder-head until it meets the muffler(slip-on) I think the (downpipe is the header) but if the clearance is not an issue, then go with what was previously explained. I know a fabricator and will in winter take of my header (down-pipe) and get it made with the expansion chambers as an akrapovic until it meets the slip on only leaving the stock exhuast flag and cat.. I can't wait bigger diamater etc.. Then i will paint a picture of it to express my feelings.............

It's all the 'header' in front of the midpipe but I was referring to the two rear cylinder pipes as the 'downpipes', trying to follow the op's terminology. If that's not what he was referring to then I dunno. 'Downpipes' are #21 & #26 here.

The new ones are Delvekic replacements for 98/99. Both the 98/99 headers and the 6th gen headers connect the same cylinders. Routing is not an issue, they fit on a 6th gen. If your thinking about installing a set of catless headers you may want to check out this post LINK.
