Picked up a used 2007 RWB VFR a couple of weeks ago. Only had 2,550 miles on it. Took it by a Honda dealership on the way home from picking it up to get their stamp of approval. They did some half-assed 10 point check and said everything was fine. Later I decided to replace the stock air filter with a K&N. When I removed the old air filter I noticed it had an oil (or what I believe to be oil) stain. It isn't huge, but definitely there. Is this a sign of the bike being dropped sometime in the past? I couldn't find any residue of oil/goo in the air box. So where did the stain come from???

Unless the stock air filters are different than a K&N.

I would say its the air filter oil that you see or saw.

Correct me if I am wrong 6th gen militia, but you do have to oil your stock air filter...right?

Sometimes debris flowing through the filter can be oily, and the dust gets attracted to that spot. I have had oily areas on nearly every air filter I have changed. I would not worry, especially if the air box itself is dry.

Sometimes people will spray WD-40 or some kind of oil on the filter to make it perform better. As long as you don't see oil inside the airbox and you don't see any leaking oil underneath the bike you're just fine.

I put on 7,200 miles on my '07 by December '07 and then changed out the air filter to a K&N over the winter. My stock filter had an oily residue and some build-up on it, so I would also say that it was normal. I haven't removed the K&N since I installed it and now have about 4,000 miles on the new filter.

I believe a lot of it is residue from the breather.

Where is the stain and how big? Got a picture? If its in the right rear, I would agree its probably from the breather.

I agree it's from the crankcase vent (breather). Perfectly normal.
