    Howdy there gang,

So for the past few weeks in Sydney, OZ, its been raining non stop and I have had the pleasure of riding in it everyday. At my work there is no undercover parking near by and as such my beloved '00 VFR as been getting soaked.

Riding home this evening I noticed that my speedo would limply twitch up to about 20km/h then drop back down to zero even though i was keeping up with traffic in 60km/h speed area.

I cant be certain its the rain but it seems to be the most likely cause. Was planning to take it into the mechanic soon anyway for a lite service but i guess it will be sooner rather than later.

on a side note, revs odo works fine as does the trip/fuel gage display.

Has anyone experienced something like this before? was it relatively easy to fix, or better yet will it fix itself?

    thanks for any ideas,

    cheers j.

yup. i had the same problem with the speedometer couple days ago. i then followed this link to check the speed sensor. (takes 2 minutes to check)
speedometer not working right - Honda Motorcycles - FireBlades.org

sure enough. the speedometer joint is worn out. it's part #10 in this diagram: (Honda part# 44808-MR7-013)
Ronayers.com Fiche Desktop Motorcycle Honda 2005 VFR800A SPEEDOMETER

    some obervations:
1 good news: the joint can be easily pulled out from the cable. easy change
2 bad news: the part cost me US$8.12 here in california from the local dealer
    3. the drive sprocket bolt is metal, the joint is plastic. that explains the wear on the joint. bad design by honda
4.looking at the worn out areas on the joint, i noticed that the joint does not completely cover the bolt. that also contributes to the premature wear (30k miles on my bike), another bad design by honda. should make the joint deeper and metal.

anyways, hopefully this helps. my temporary solution is to connect the joint to the cable 3/4 way. so that the drive sprocket bolt can still turn the joint and give correct readings on the meter

yes, the fault is that the drive socket wears and does not engage with the sprocket bolt.

Mine did the same thing some years back. Remedy was to place a thick washer under the sprocket securing bolt. The plastic socket then engages better with the bolt head. Cost zilch.
Other cheap remedies include blue-tack or chewing gum.

does this effect the trip meter I noticed upon reseting my trip meter the mileage is not reading correctly. My speedo also started acting up first with twitching and now many times going to zero even on the freeway.

update* fixed the jumpy speedo with some rtv untill the new nylon nut comes in for the sensor, but i got cheated out of some mileage :/
