Ok...I would like to preface this question with a remark first. I'm not looking for a second amendment debate. Having a CHL is a personal decision that everyone makes and I already made my decision for my own personal reasons. That being said, I am not looking for reasons why I should or should not carry.

Question: As a part of the rules and regulations for CHL, I can not carry in certain places….i.e. a post office and etc. So if I am on a ride and I need to stop at the post office or pick my kids up from school, I need to lock my firearm up some where on the bike. Given that I do not have any baggage and etc. I have nowhere to lock it up. Are there any manufactures out there that make something for this purpose? And or Have any of you had this problem and what was your solution?

    Thanks.

Would it not fit under the seat? If not, it would at least fit under the cowl if you use a 2 piece seat like the world sport from sargent. Gotta give you points for most original question this week for this one. :)

Now just hold on a minute. I would first like to say that I am not a New Yorker and consider their laws stupid and backwards. I am a PA boy an always will be, and we can carry guns everywhere and usually do. I do believe that the CH thing is only in NYC anyway and I am far from that sh#t hole. It's just that I found your post amusing and felt compelled to respond in humorous fashion. I have alot of respect for Texans and thier free way of life we should all be like Texas and not NY. I hope I am not offending anyone in this message and do not mean to. Well except for you Cali guys of course...joking...lol!

I'm not offended...I don't get offended easily. I found your originl response amusing. I called you a smart arse because that what I would have said to anybody...but I would have been chuckling when I said it...I was chuckling at your response when I called you a smart arse.

I used to ride with some dudes that had CHL's. They had their pistols stored under their seat since it was lockable.

I could never understand why they brought them on group rides. It was under their seat and not very accessible or useful for motorcycling.

I don't ride with them anymore, but not because of the guns.

    TX_03_VFR800,

I agree with your decision to carry, but if you do so while riding I suggest you avoid places where carry is unlawful. My main concern is that while you are away from your bike, you have no control over your handgun. I don't believe you will be able to find a SECURE way to store it on your bike. It is hard enough to keep it secure in a car but at least in a car a thief would need tools to get in and would likely be noticed. Most "secure" motorcycle compartments can be ripped open w/ brute force (not a safe place for a handgun). Also consider that when you lock it up, people will see where you put it because you are out in the open. In a cage, view is obscured by glare off windows, doors, dash, etc. And even if they can't open the compartment, they can p/u the whole bike and have the gun as a bonus when they have time to get it out. Now, you are responsible for giving an criminal access to your gun. I just would not risk it. On days when you suspect you will need to stop by a non gun friendly place, take the cage or leave the heater at home.

I've asked this question before, and never got a response that I liked. I do like having my pistol on me, especially in the "questionable" parts of St. Louis and the surrounding areas. I've heard of bike-jackings where people literally get pulled off their bikes.... bad stuff.

Anyway, I think that hard luggage is probably the only way to go in this case. There is nothing made specifically for this purpose as of yet. If there is a small gun safe that can fit in the oem hard luggage, that would probably be the way to go. Under the seat just doesn't sound like a good option to me, especially if you carry a larger frame handgun (like a 1911 or something).

Good luck with your search, and if you find anything that works for your/our application, please report back in this thread. I'd love to see what you find.

I'd get one of those cable locks that fit through the breach, then fab up a space in the front fairing with a dremel. I'm was thinking of making a space for a spring baton in my front fairing to crack the windshields of people who try to kill me on the road, but enough people carry guns here that it would just be a war of escalation. Besides I figure most of the time it's accidental so I may as well forgive them and ride away.

It looks like there's plenty of room between the steering neck and the fairings around it.

You could make a stubby little sawed-off and get The Stash exhuast :p Mad max...

You could get a Gold Wing, put nubby tires on it, paint it desert camo, and carry an arsenal. :p Speaking of which, I'm assuming you guys have seem this; http://www.timcamerondesign.com.au/spider.htm

If you don't have a gun in Alabama, they'll give you one at any Baptist Church or Post Office!

I don't carry on my VFR because I would shoot anyone w/a W sticker on their car!:first:

Hey! Cali rocks. ;) You have to admit California has an interesting dichotomy (I think that's the right word) when it comes to laws. While they are liberal and free at times, at other times, they(we I guess) are the most regulated place I have ever been. I loved Montana when I lived there. It seemed like the general opinion of the people there was, 'we are fine, leave us alone, we can handle our own laws' Plus, it is a very beautiful uncrowded place to live. The weather got me, though! Sometimes summer fell on the weekend and I got to enjoy it. :)

Carry something smaller (like an XD-9 subcompact) so you don't worry about it being seen. Also, mail your letters from home (you have a mail box right) and pick up your kids in the cage.

I carry a mid size frame semi-auto so concealment is not the issue. If I know ahead of time that I will be going somewhere where I can not carry...i leave it at home or take the cage. The examplesI gave might not have been the best of examples.

So, let's assume I am just out and about on the bike and decide (for whatever reason) to stop off at a store...let's say for gas and it is the last gas station for a hundred miles...meaning I have no choice but to stop...I go in to pay and as I go in I see a 30.06 sign (for those who do know...statute 30.06 allows businesses to post a sign in accordance with said statute to keep those who have a CHL from carrying on their property).

In this type of situation, I could not plan ahead of time and therefore your solution...although simplistic and rational (sort of a ‘no brainer’)...it is absolutely useless.

I hope I am not offending you as that is not my intention...I simply need a solution for unavoidable situations where I would have to lock the weapon to my bike.

Unless you're entering a govt building, they'll never know anyway. That's why its concealed. ;)

Lockable hard bags with a small handgun safe inside is unfortunately your best bet. Using a cable lock to attach the safe to the bike would also help deter a possible theif. There just aren't many options out there for us, man.

You are certainly not offending me. I can see that you are a good citizen trying to maintain your rights and abid the law.

I would never do this, "but I have a friend" that tries his best to follow the letter of the law... but in the given situation (from your post), he would just go in and try really hard not to shoot anyone (he has been carrying for 7 yrs now without shooting someone yet... although the temptation has been there (just kidding)).

Like the other post said, that is why it is concealed. Of course, I would ride until my gas tank ran out and walk to the next gas station to get a gas can and walk back to the bike... but my friend would just ignore the sign as he has before.

I think all of the "get hard cases, inside place a safe, chain the safe to the bike" is a bit too much, and still, you would be safer with the firearm on you (the firearm would be safer, I mean). I wouldn't go through all that hassle... I would have all that stuff, and then consider the 5 minutes it would take me to (in a concealed way) transfer the firearm from by waist to the safe within my hard case. Then I (I mean my friend) would just walk in with it anyway.

Good luck to you. If you don't pull it out or show it no one will know you have it. If the gas station gets robbed while you are there and you stop it... I am sure they will be leanient with the whole "30.06" thing.

You don't mean to say he "jumped the gun" in his response to you?

The he reacted without knowing the whole situation? Well at least he just fired of his keyboard instead of the firearm.

And I don't care what you put under the seat, the idea of leaving a firearm on a bike is just insane. Yeah, let's leave a firearm locked up to something that can be thrown in the back of a pickup or van and driven away in about 20 seconds.
