i have an '83 vf750- i just did a compression test (cold engine and carburetors off). cyl 1 - 120 psi cyl 2 - 130 psi cyl 3 - 120 psi cyl 4 - 120 psi are these results correct or 'good'? and is there an indication of whether or not there is a valve adjustment needed from these results? i just got the bike a few days ago(not running). i finally got it to start , but not idle. it has VERY LITTLE power and slow response.... i plan to clean the carbs, but don't want to go through all that work if there is bigger issues like bad rings etc....
Compression looks fine. There is noway to tell from compression if the valves need adjusting under normal wear. Though you may want to pull the valve covers to see if the cams are good. If they are then adjust the lash at .006" using two feeler gauges at a time. The carbs most likely will need to be totally dismantled,soaked and clean. Carbs have different parts front to rear. Don't mix them up. Leave plentum plate on when R&R ing. Also lack of power could be not all 4 cylinders firing. Usually is carbs, ignition boxes, pulse generators or wiped cams. If you have a factory service manual then all is well if you can do the work.
