    Clutch Grabbing? - Solotion found

    Hi Guys,

I need some advice wrt to clutch on my '00. When the bike is cold, and sometimes when it is hot, if I release the clutch slowly while holding a bit of revs on pullaway, the bike launches forward with a strange whine noise, pulling it back in immediately disengages the clutch and I can pull away like normal.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is causing this?

I think I would pull the plates oot and inspect them for damage and if they are wearing evenly. Also inspect the clutch hub for wear and that the jutter springs are installed correctly and the basket is not worn .

That sounds like a lot of stripping for a bike I've only had three weeks :(

I've had guys say that the motor may be running the wrong oil, can that be it?

While I would never disagree with Mr. Toe because of his vast experience and knowledge, sometimes its easier to start with the simple things. And an oil change is just that. If you've only had it for 3 weeks and don't know what the previous oil was, why not give it a try?

Cool, thanks for the info thus far chaps. Now the next question: What oil should I use? Or should I just walk into a stealership and ask them for oil for the VFR?

you want a 10w40 MOTORCYCLE oil. Not an automotive oil. You can use a Dino, Synthetic or a dino/synthetic blend.

Did you try bleeding the clutch system? Could have air in it and leaves a little pressure against the pressure plate rod at first. Which might squeal against the pressure plate. Then when you pump it again the pressure is off the rod which comes away from the pressure plate.

Just a guess. Simple to bleed system.

I'll try that as well, but doubt that the system has air in, clutch disengages high on the lever and there is no spongyness to it, nice solid action. Will go and see what I can find oil wise tomorrow.

BTW, if the clutch needs to be replaced, do I replace only the friction plates, or the metal ones as well?

Sorry about the amount of questions, but this being my first proper bike, I'd like to keep it in good condtition

Nice looking bike. I love the looks of the 5th Gen.

If your going to do the clutch right. Then replace plates and frictions. Possible a tension/thrust conical type washer also. You'll have to look at a parts blow up.

Just went to the dealership, it was serviced with the correct spec oil 1000km ago, so all I can probably do now is to strip and look what is going on at the clutch...
