I have started to Semi-restore my 2000 VFR. I love the bike but, I hated the color (yellow). I have all the paint ready. I plan on changeing to a dual black and candy red. The plastics and the current gas tank (I bought a 6th gen gas tank On the Way) are all preped and ready for paint. However, the weather in "sunny" southern California hasn't been ideal. We have been recieving lots of wind and cold temperatures. Also, my compressor failed so, i either have to invest in a new one or find a place to paint my parts. CAn you guys help me find a good paint shop. I have been calling various places and they don't want to conduct the work because they are motorcycle parts. BS. I took the exhaust apart, wait a pain that was. The pipes are super rusty. I bought vht fire proof paint in matte red. I read the mixed reviews about baking the paint but, do you guys have any tips? I plan on sanding the major area and then applying a wire brush on the hard to reach areas.

By the way, I am fairly new to the VFR. I have only been with her for about 6 months. Do, I'm taking this chance to learn everything about her. I took off the rear wheel and started taking off 12 years worth of grease. Holy moly, tons of crud and ugly stuff in there. I sprayer the swing arm with an automotive degreaser. I checked the sprokets and the chain, and they are building up rust as they are not lubricated. Should I worry about this? I was planning on working on her throughout january. I am a pretty big guy, 6 ft 2 in 280lbs and it was kind of hard to clean under the rear suspension/swing arm. So it is still kind of dirty. Any tips for a more thorough clean?

By the way I got some of the degreaser on my rear brake pads. Should I buy new ones? or can i clean them? Kind of scared to take them apart as I have never done it before. Mostly scared sue to ill installation and brake failure.

The rear wheel is off and ready for a "chrome" polish. I bought airliner paint stripper. for that and blue magic polish. By the way, how would it turn out if I stripped the paint and applied a heavy clear enamel coat over that (wheel paint)?

I will also do it to the front as soon as I buy a "jack" for the bike. right now its on the center stand. I am going to paint the brake calipers red.

Upon disassembly, I noticed that a lot of screws are missing (on the body work. My rear yellow fender only have two screws holding it down. The front fender is missing one screw. fairings are missing 3 metal and 2 plastic screws. The clain guard is missing one screw. And so on. Where can I order these screws without paying $15 for shipping for local dealerships (its insane).

The previous owner dropped the bike in his garage, its the only impact its had. The front right faings cracked. I plastic welded them and they look good (no paint yet).

The rear "mud flap" was showing oxidation and sun damage. So, I cleaned it up with my heat gun. That thing works magic! Looks like new!

This is not really a budget restoration. I have already invested $500 in paint, cleaning supplies, and some tools. Please help me out with any tips and suggestions you have. By the way, I will have and extra 5th gen gas tank, if anyone is interested in any trades let me know. Also have some 2009 17" wheels and tires if you're interested.

    Pics to come
