Yes that's the insulator or rubber manifold. Double check the year. I picked out the 86 thinking that's what you have.

I'm looking forward to using this as a guide soon. Nice job with the whole post. Will the pictures be accurate for my 90 VFR 750F?

great right up there mate, Question, is there a standard starting point for air screw mixture and other adjustable scews as Im about to stick a newish set of carbys to my VFR 750 95 model and am a little lost with where to start. ie when starting with my 525 i adjust air mixture screw 1 1/2 turns out from closed.

Adjust each screw to its BEST setting according to service manual's "idle drop proceedure"

Factory initial setting would be in the range from 2--- 2 1/2, but for best running, mixture screw should be custom set --TUNED-- for each cylinder.

A bike set up as above will start and idle better and have better low speed smoothness and power than any bike that was just set according to factory numbers, which allow for US EPA emissions regs.

(VFR mixture screws control fuel, not air.)

Well put and I agree. With stock jetting and good clean carbs, I usually end up in the 2.5 to 3.5 range. Honda stock slow settings are plenty lean. With Honda's I usually use 3.0 for an initial setting.

You can also use the 'idle drop' to help diagnose clogged or wrong sized slow jets. IE...if I end up with mix screw settings under 1.5, I start suspecting someone's changed or drilled the slows. If I end up over 4.0 or the adjustment has no effect, I start thinkin' the slow on that cylinder is clogged.

Finding this post the other day was perfect..My Gen 2 has been sitting in pieces since July 2008 after a homeless man decided to walk in front of traffic. I almost freaked when gas began to leak and had no idea why until I read this post. Thanks for taking the time to do the write-up....Very Helpful.

Little vaseline and those boots should slip right on? Curious if that's a good method.

It helps if they are still a little soft but yeah some sort of lube and install the front as far as they will go and tilt the rear up to mate with the carbs and they will go on pretty easy.

Starter plungers. Actually a CHOKE plunger not really a jet.
Just enriches the carb on start up.

BUTANE torch on a carb?? Dismantled, no fuel right? hmmmmm

I'd like to place an addendum to this highly meritorious thread, as follows:

Sometimes playaz say "I knows dem jets beze clean cuz i saw light through dems," but that's not enough to say they are as clean as they were when new. Layers of invisible accretions of dried fuel pile up like stalagmites around the hole, reducing its size even if you can see light, and that's where the wire does its job !

    IMG_1672. jpg.JPG IMG_1069.jpg IMG_1265.jpg

The fuel enrichment circuits (aka, choke) won't work right unless the long, non-removable brassy pickup tubes are cleared with a 012" steel wire to a depth of about 30 mm and you can easily blow air through with lung pressure

was doing a carburetor re-build and thought everything was fine, re-assembled and the damn bike was still acting like a turd, long story short, there was a clear piece of sand stuck in one of the jets, I visially looked at it and could see day light through it but didnt pass the wire thru, Gota be methodical and take your time.

Like your idea with the wire from tie-bag thingies, threw some in one of my drawers...Cheers

OK, so I have a '87 vfr700 that is idling poorly, and acts like it's running lean. As I am preparing to pull the carbs off to clean them I notice what appears to be a vacuum port that is not attached to anything. There are no loose hoses lying around, so I have no idea what should be attached... Before I just plug the port and put the tank and seat back on and go for a test ride, can anyone tell me what is supposed to be connected to it? It's right in the middle of the attached image.
