So I've just about got my 86 rebuilt to rideable status ( just waiting on a couple more parts I should have on friday ) So now it's time to make her SHINE. I've got some gas stains on the tank. everythign I've read says use a " clay bar" treatment to remove em then wax her up nice and clean I was also thinking of getting a small handheld random orbit buffer ( only 20 bucks!) and going after the whole bike with polishing compound then a good solid wax job I also need to polish up the screen to clear it back up I already hit most the black plastic with Vaseline to reblacken it. I degreased the motor and everything with some gunk cleaner. The Paint is nice "morphing" Purple/Blue Flame paint job ( looks nicer then it sounds I swear) So basically I would like to hear opinions on these: 1. What should I use to strip old wax / any left over "gunk" 2. What is a good clay bar set up to use? 3. What Polishing compound should I use if any ? 4. What Wax should I use ( I see that these forums preach the Honda polish .. but would that make a good " base wax" ) 5. What should I use on the windscreen ? 6. and lastly ............ how would I use each product to produce the best result? frankly I've never done something like this before . Thanks for everyone's opinions!!!!
for getting the old wax off I would use a mild dawn dish soap and water mix, it will eat all the wax off. im not sure about the clay bar but im sure someone here has the answer I use turtle wax and it makes her shine takes some buffing but if you have a buffer thats easy i started using Meguiars PlastX it works great put a small amount on and wipe it off amazing results good luck im sure there will be some other responses last of all go for a ride!!!
Use the clay bar first. They usually come with some kind of spray lubricant/cleaner. Follow the directions on the package. The clay should get most of the minor imperfections out of the paint. If you've never messed with stuff like this the most abrasive cleaner I'd use is something like a body scrub. IMO any of the newer liquid wax's will give you good results. I like the Meguiars NXT Wax but there are a lot of good ones out there. After you have got it waxed using a spray detailer once a week (more if needed) will help keep that just waxed look. Action
For any chrome related cleaning and polishing......I recommend "Never Dull". It's very easy to use and works great....
