    Hey all,

What's a safe way to clean inside of airbox?

I've got the bike apart and have some parts ordered and on route, but I got a new air filter now and I'd like to start buttoning up where I can.

When I removed the old filter, I noticed there was some fuel residue/varnish on the housing.

What's a safe way to clean this stuff out before placing the new air filter back in?

I'm hesitant on using carb cleaner as that stuff is pretty aggressive.

What what you guys use here?

You can try a variety of solvents that won't hurt the your housing. Just don't spray it right on. Spray it onto a rag first. WD40 actually makes a very good cleaner for many things. But it does leave a residue which I don't think I would loose any sleep over. If you are worried about it, follow up with some sort of glass cleaner, again applying the cleaner to the rag. Mineral spirits may work. Chain degreaser? But again, spray onto clean rag and clean the surface with that.

A lot of tire cleaners are quite corrosive so I would watch there if there are metal parts.

Paint thinner. aka mineral spirits at more pesos. Not an "always" thing...Rattlecan cleaning agents of many types can contain hot solvents that can degrade paint and plastic.

Regular grade gasoline aka white gas, should work too.

VM&P naptha or even barbeque starter should work. All are mild solvents.

The idea here is to dissolve the residue to mop it up. Dispose of the rags in water then air dry them. If not they can combust.

Some of the degreasers on the market can be effective. Walmart and Costco both sell a concentrate that can be used out of the bottle or diluted with water depending on the need. Aboot seven pesos a gallon for the stuff.

Side note: CRC non- flammable in the red can. Thanks to California it's not the greatest cleaner anymore but it still works good and doesn't melt plastic like Oreily's. You still don't want to get it in your eyes though........
