Ok, I bought some cheap levers.

When I say "cheap" I mean $20 to have all the adjustable stuff, but didn't spend any more than I had to.

The brake and clutch levers are the same brand, and both labeled to fit my 86-87 VFR700/750F2.

The brake fit fine, and works great!

    The clutch doesn't.

I have narrowed it down to 4 possibilities:
    1) There is a part of the lever that is a bit thicker than on the one I'm replacing. It's a part that sits right up against the perch there, and might be keeping the lever from getting into the right spot.

Grinding down would fix this, and with my dremel, I could do that pretty quick, I think.

    2) The perch is bent because the guy before me had a crappy bolt in there that wasn't made for it, and now the lever is kinda loose in there. The bend makes the bolt not fit correctly.

I don't know how to fix this

    3) Combo of #1 and #2

    4) I'm just a pussy who can't man-handle the lever into position to get the bolt in, and shouldn't have a bike....

anyone have any trouble with cheap levers, bent perches, or am I a pussy?

I'm going to go see if I can get a better understanding of what is going on here, but anyone had any trouble with cheap levers? Specifically "Motion Pro"?

I didn't work on it too long last night, but I could see what was happening, and the bolt was half the width off on the bottom end...I don't wanna bend the aluminum perch, for fear of it snapping, but I might have to. Or drill it out and use a lock nut on the bottom, neither of which seem like good ideas....

    update:

when I got the perch bolt off an old parts Nighthawk in the back of the yamaha shop, the guy handed me the lever that went with it. On a whim, I dropped that lever in, and the bolt went in quick like sex. Which says to me, clearance problem on the lever.

and since the shop won't take returns on un-opened merchandise....

I'm going to break out the dremel once I get back from xmas break
