there is a couple responses on the vfrd site. i personally have a good tool i used when i did mine. i would imagine it would be o.k to use the screw type. its still the same principle of pressing everything together then flaring the link ends around the plate. its definately less expensive.

I'm finding it difficult to find add tooth steel sprockets for the rear. Seems the fronts are easy, but for some reason every rear sprocket I find is aluminum. Anyone have an easy answer? EDIT: TravelingViffer hooked me up with a kit from Sprocket Center, of steel sprockets (drop/add tooth too!) and chain for only $180, so I'm good here; thanks TV!

Speaking of which, I'd like to get the gearing to the point that on a flat straight I just hit redline in 6th, but 1st is still usable; anyone know the EXACT combo of sprocket teeth change I need to make that happen?

Also, has anyone tried those Ti sprockets since this thread is so old? They looked awfully expensive to me...

EXPECT to replace 3 or 4 alloy sprockets for the same mileage as steel. They don't last well.

THE tool sold by Motion Pro that does it all is excellent and does the job so easy........not cheap however.

I also doubt they could possibly last half as long as a steel one. I think Squirrel is getting warmer. In addition to being softer, aluminum isn't a very slippery metal. This is why an aluminum sprocket reduces your peak rear wheel horsepower and your gas mileage in addition to wearing out faster.

When I bought my current VFR, there were several blown seals and sticky links and the chain was so loose I was afraid it would fall off by itself. It was a sad sight. And there was still no visile sign of wear on the OEM sprockets after 32k miles and that kind of maintenance in New England weather. The teeth appear perfectly symmetrical. I left them on and just replaced the chain. No adjustments needed since installation, except for a minor tweak after initial 200 mile break-in.

I bought a decent RK chain breaker set. I feel like all the money I saved (and am saving on insurance) on buying an old, used bike, I'm willing to spend on good tools. I'll still have them when I buy my next used VFR. :)
