    Greetings all
Today I slipped the muffler pipe off the cat conv on my 04 vfr to try to see if there were an easy way to clear the honeycomb out of it. Did not look to me that it would be easy to clear it out. So am asking for advise in this matter. It would seem to me that this is quite a restriction to flow, and I would think some performance gains could be had by gutting CC. A PC III usb will be my first mod to the bike. A question that comes to me is what is the point in adding expensive slipons with that big restriction in the CC ? Anyway advice here will be appreciated, Tks BBuck

Might be easier to replace the cat with a section of straight pipe

Thanks for suggestion Rev. That might be what I have to do, but would rather leave the converter body there so it will look like nothing has been done to it.

Bayou Buck, I feel the easiest way is to drop the front header pipes w/ cat and take them to your local muffler shop and have them cut it open, clean it out, and re-weld them. The muffler shop charged me only $50.00. After you reinstall the cat, start it up, sounds awesome!!! I also added the Pwr. Comm. III usb w/ o2 elim, runs way better. Kenji

KENJI, thanks for the good info. I bet the performance improvement would be as good as adding slipons by themselves and much more cost effective. My money will be spent for performance gains rather than show, as I think the bike looks great enough already.

Bayou Buck, I really haven't thought about voiding the warranty, but I feel that it shouldn't interfere with any issues that arise. I guess I was thinking performance & rideability instead of voiding the warranty. Kenji

I would replace it with a straight pipe. That way I could put it back on for warranty/emissions purposes. Does anyone make such a pipe for sale?

Just make sure they weld a stop for your centerstand. Kenji

Thanks for the welcome Danimal. I live in NW Fl. on Choctawhatchee Bay near Destin. Pretty good area for riding, but looking forward to an East Tn trip this spring. Take care BBuck

Thanks Kenji, just wondered about that, warranty that is, I would not think it would matter either. My dealer here said aftermarket pipes an PC would not be a problem, but I did not think about the cat at the time. BBuck

WVFR that would be great if a straight pipe is available. If not that would be a good enterprise for a good welder/fabricator to get into. Tks BBuck

    Cat. Conv. eliminator

If anyone out there can make a production drawing, or fabricate a sample piece that works (with the center stand stop), I could get a batch made up.

As far as warranty is conserned it only affects what your mod is concerned with. for example: you can't claim valve damage from running to lean, but you can claim the oil pump failure or your speedo quit working. modding your bike doesnt void your entire warranty. your best defense is having an experienced proffesional do your dyno tuning. being too lean will damage your engine (read: detonation= very bad) and too rich will foul plugs and buildup carbon on the pistons. basically take your bike straight to your dyno guy after removing your cat for a custom map. that is when you will gain the best power available and protect your investment.

Thanks goinphaster, good advise and good info. Another question, will removing smog equipment, PAIR, along with cat removal bring any performance gains? Thanks BBuck

anything outside of the cat will only get you weight reduction and more room. I never had a complaint about all the emissions gear until they added that stupid cat. If you do remove anything, get online and find the blank off kit or make it yourself, don't leave anything "open".

OK thanks, if no performance gains will probably not mess with emission controls other than the cat. BBuck
