I am really close to buying a carbon fiber Micron high mount for my 5th gen, but have read in a few places that the carbon fiber can break down over time. I understand that in theory that could happen when the resin goes through countless heat cycles, but have any of you actually had this happen?

If so, how long did it take? I'd like to hear your stories!

If not, where are these stories coming from? I don't have any to quote at the moment but I have read them in various places...

For 2 1/2 years now my CF Akrapovic exhaust has held up fine. I have put about 16,000 miles on it and it has sat out under the sun for many hours while I work. The only difference now is that it is not as shiny as it once was.

The main thing to be concerned about with carbon fiber is fading.....left in direct sunlight for long hours day in and day out....like everything else pretty much....it will fade. My two brothers carbon still looks great to me. It is at least 5-6 years old from what the previous owner told me.

A carbon came with the bike I have now - my guess its 6 - 7 years old. It still looks & performs as new. I like it! Very light and never hot to the touch. I'd get it again. Pic in gallery.

Thanks for the responses guys. That alleviates some of my concern about the CF. I think I'm going to go with a Micron CF high mount, but before I place my order I'm trying to meet up with someone near me to hear his Staintune. I've heard the difference online but I'd really like to hear one in person. If I love the Staintune sound, I'll plunk down the extra $ for one...

Carbon fiber is clear coated like everything else and it can be polished with cleaner wax. Works well. I had Akras on my ZX10 and they would turn a faded greenish color after a bit and it just took a little time and some paste wax to make em new again.

My Micron high mount has been on a little over a year now, and it looks the same as the day I got it.

It's seen plenty of time in the sun parked at work, but it is garaged and I wax it every few months for a little extra uv protection.

The Staintune is of course going to be louder and a little more ferocious then the the CF. But once the Micron breaks in a bit, it sounds pretty friggin amazing. I ditched my stainless exhaust and have never been happier, it was too harsh and piercing.

I have a Micron CF High Mount on my 4th Gen, and love the way it sounds!!!!! Haven't had any issues with the CF, although it's only 1.5 years old...
