Ok guys I bought a jet kit off of eBay and the jets that they gave me for my 85 vf500 were 1)95*, 1)97.5*, 1)100*, 1)102.5. i was wondering why they gave me these when originally have 105* in the bike already so any help would be appreciated

Stock main jet for the '85 is 90 in all four carbs. I would think that it would be running a bit rich with 105s. I have no idea why the eBay kit would come with those jets, maybe there is some reason to it, perhaps some of the more knowledgeable guys on here can help out with that.

Believe my 85 ran on #97.5 and I'm at 5000ft. Would not run on #90.

    One size rarely fits all.

I'm close to ordering a jet-kit and rebuild kit for the carbs on my 85' VF700F, and I had some similar questions. I spoke with a guy that manages a Cycle-Gear, he used to own a Honda motorcycle dealership. He told me that each carburetor runs a differant amount, and he sounded sure of it. I guess I believe him because he offered that information up to me without prompting. He said that the carbs on that bike are very tricky and unique in a few ways, that being one of them. Perhaps the kit you bought is correct? Hope this helps. Maybe some of the other guys on this forum with more of a technical background can offer a more precise answer than I can. That's just word of mouth that I am passing along. GOOD LUCK. Let me know what you find out, as I will most likely have the same issue.

Some jetkits use their own propriatary jets which can match the number on the stock jets but have different hole sizes.

    Dynojet is one.

True, and Dynojet uses 118 and a 122 sizes for their VF500F kit. If you do an internet search, you'll find cross references for the two sizing methods.

Ok guys I pulled the carbs out and put 97.5 in front and 100 in the rear and then cleaned the carbs again. I also did the petcock mod that Jamie daughtry had on his web site, which worked great, put the carbs back on, started the bike, it fired right up but I still have a problem. The bike will not idle without the choke being atleast half way closed. It will however rev up when I twist the throttle but it just won't idle. I did ride it up and down my road to get it up to oper temp but still would not idle without the choke. I did turn the mixing screws out 2 turns but I still have not synced the carbs yet. I did check for vac leaks by spraying carb cleaner around boots and vac ports and everything was fine. Will I have to sync the carbs before it will idle without the choke or is there something else I have to try. FYI I did clean the pilot jet with wire

you didnt clean the carbs properly. you need to clean EVERY passage, not just the pilot jets to get it to idle. your circuit is still partially obstructed.

    I agree with this.

It certainly won't hurt anything for you to put the vacuum gauges on it and see if the balance is in the ballpark. But my hunch would be that the problem is clogged passages.

Maybe pull them apart and have the bodies ultrasonic cleaned.

After removing the slow jet, remove all the bits in the idle mixture screw hole being careful not to lose the spring, washer, or O-ring, and force in compressed air + carb cleaner.

Usually you sync carbs at idle roughly 1000rpm. You need to reset the idle after adjusting each carb. Once synced they should stay at the same level even when you blip the throttle.

Hey guys I need you alls opinion on this. I have a plate that I just found in a box that I got with the bike. This plate replaces the stock airbox so that individual air filter pods can but put on. I also wanted to know what the benefit is going to a pods system over the stock airbox. I'll post some pics of the plate and pods placed on the carbs in a minute.
