Unfortunately I've hit a plateau. I've made no measurable progress in the the last week or so.:frown: The thought of having to sell/trade the Ducati 1198 for a VFR1200 DCT is starting to look like a reality, if I want to get back in the saddle sooner rather than later:hss:

you've tried to ride? I sprained the shit out of my thumb two weeks ago. Have had to ride by palming the bar with the thumb over the top instead of wrapped around.

Better luck in your recovery, JTC. Keep at it - who knows, like working out, the plateau could very well be temporary. In the meantime, I think a DCT would be a great choice. I know that they are maligned by some, but it looks to be a great motorcycle regardless. If it's like every other VFR, it will handle much better that it's weight would suggest; allowing you to get your sport on. It may not be an 1198, but you're still riding with some spirit inspite of the hand.

    JTC,

give the DCT VFR a go. It rides much like your current VFR. You won't feel like you are leaving the sportbike arena. This type of situation is perfect for that tech. Also, get a rekluse for your dirtbike. It'll make you a better rider. Fater downhill. Easy hillclimbs. Come up here and I'll help you rehab in those hills over by Pozo. I'm working on getting a motorhome so we could camp out there and do some intensive ride therapy in the days and beer hand to mouth coordination therapy in the evening.

Thanks for the replies and words of encouragement. I saw the hand specialist yesterday:frown: He's suggesting a proximal row carpectomy but he said my hand may be too badly damaged and he may have to perform a "simpler" surgery resulting in 0, no, nada wrist function. Then he will proceed to fuse my wrist in a "functional" position. But of course, he won't know until he's in there. WTF? Anyway, I instead chose the "long shot" option to keep the pain and my wrist for now. I get two 0 gauge pins out this week, and next month they'll start removing K-wires. Doc is adamant that I have chosen the most difficult route, with the most painful and longest recovery time. Not to mention, very dismal, are my chances that I won't end up 6 months from now having to go with one of the previous mentioned surgeries anyway.
In addition to all my prescribed physical therapy, I go out to the garage and either sit on the bike or stand next to it. With my right hand I pull the clutch in, then I wrap my left paw around it and proceed to hold it for 1 minute, rest and repeat a few sets per day. Today I actually pulled it about a 1/16 of an inch, which is leaps and bounds considering that I absolutely could not budge it up till now...
I just don't fucking know guys??? If successful, the quickest way for me to get back to work and back on a bike would be the proximal row carpectomy but I'd be left with less than 50% wrist function for the rest of my life. Which of course is better than having my wrist fused in a "functional" position. The path I've chosen is only successful in 5% of patients but those 5% recover 85-100% functionality of the hand and wrist despite years/decades of chronic pain.

bummer, I didn't realize it was your wrist too.

A surgery where the doc is that skeptical about success; I'd probably get a second opinion myself. Best wishes (provided you keep those nasty avatar pics off the board).

limited wrist function... man, stay away from the internet porn.

on a serious note, though. I am not a big fan of surgery unless it is absolutely necessary, and I'm about as hard headed as you are. I'd probably resist it and bet against the docs advice, too. that's one of the hazards/benefits of our work.

I do know that if you did get your wrist fused, you could still ride with a clutch. you could just have a little plastic hook that you slip over your wrist. let me see if I can describe what i'm thinking. imagine the special archery glove type thing, but with a little hard plastic hook big enough to catch a clutch lever and pull it back. Does that make sense?

Besides you only need the clutch taking off and stopping.

    Yep, makes perfect sense Reg.
At this point I don't care how, I just need to get back on. I've lived in SoCal my whole life therefore haven't gone this long without riding in almost 17 years. (June 5th will be 17 years since I got my M1). Forgive me, I'll admit, I'm spoiled as far as riding weather is concerned. Before the injury, I rode almost everyday rain or shine, dirt or street. I've even hit 1000 consecutive days a couple times.
I'd like to read some stories of the trials and tribulations of others on this board who've come back from some sort of debilitating mishap. Believe it or not, I think I'm starting to go through the depression phase of this thing and knowing that others have been down the same road and still made it back would be a big help psychologically, and even emotionally.
BTW: In case you didn't notice. My new and improved avatar is now more aesthetically pleasing.:boobies4:

Surgery went well today. Doc took out more hardware than I expected. Both 0 gauge pins (thicker ones with the bend on the end) came out of my radius and most of the k-wires are out. Last 1 (extreme left of x-ray) scheduled to come out May 25th. The Mitek Anchors (2 little black dots) attaching my ligaments will probably stay in forever. I was ordered no PT until May 2nd, so no clutching exercises till then. Sorry, no new x-ray pics yet. I did the best I could to explain what came out using one of the old ones.

Don't worry dude. Your riding is not over. You are just gonna adjust the way you do it. He'll I've been thinking of a rekluse clutchless system myself in the YZ and the new VFR already has it. You couldn't have picked a better time to have to go through this. Bring up whichever bike and I'll even break man-law and have you on pillion if we have to!

:sorry:bro, if its OK with her? I think I'd rather ride two up with Chicky... thanks for the offer though. However, your idea of putting me on as beer temp monitor and taste tester:drink: and some cook duties:hungry: may be the best way for me to contribute to R3.
