I rode for over an hour with nothing more than an oil leak. on the way back my engine started overheating.

It spewed fluid from the cap at about half temp.

from that point it went up and down sometimes spewing fluid or sometimes steaming.

It eventually got real hot despite more water and time on the side of the road.

    water pump or blockage?

Anyone have a water pump i can buy in time for the niagara ride on the 30th?

Checking the level of coolant under the rad cap should be periodic routine maintenance, so when did you last check?

I have a story of how a neglected oil leak on my '86 700 CAUSED a water leak.........

a stuck-closed thermostat does happen sometimes and is statistically far more likely than a bad pump.

if one or more cylinders quit firing you could have a blown headgasket.

inspect all hoses and hose clamps, and check that the missing coolant is not in your oil pan.

pumps seldom -to -never fail and will leave a puddle under your bike as a warning.

Rad cap may be faulty and not holding normal pressure.

does your fan kick in by 2/3 of temp gauge??

right side just under the bottom of upper fairing, under the right handlebar.
after lower fairing is removed...just 3 bolts, and maybe replace the O-ring in there too.

I caint believe i didnt think of this... try simple stuff first. im a tech. i know this concept. anyway.

I had to modify the stat from my wifes car to fit, and it no longer overheats, even on the highway at 75.

    which is awsome.

new problem tho. It spews a little fluid from the radiator cap every minute or two. It seems to be doing this pretty constantly.

Weak cap? spewing every time the stat opens?

On the way back from my test run the temp went up and it quit spewing coolant. it did not seem to be getting any hotter however.

inspect the top surface of filler neck where cap screws in as it's a very soft alloy, and any gouges or nicks in that area could leak pressure and coolant.

Under inspection of the radiator the lip that holds the cap on was almost compleetly gone.

I bent up the 2 lips of the radiator cap and only put the cap on about 1 cm.

It holds good and tight and my bike has not overheated or lost coolant since.

    Thanks alot for the help.
