I checked this bike out today. I haven't had a VFR in probably 10 years, so i've not been active here.

The fuel tank was rust free, bike was a little crusty from being parked under a canopy at the back of an apartment complex. Put a bore scope down the cylinders the valves looked good, pistons had a bit of carbon build up. Turned it over it sounded ok. Put a little starter fluid down the carbs and cranked and she fired up.

The bike is now in my garage. I'm planning on doing a deep clean and refresh. Anything rubber will need to be replaced. Fuel lines, brake lines, tires, etc. New chain and sprockets.

The way I see it, if I picked up a bike that is less than 300 and it needs work, but I can get it running, it will be a fun project. If I can't bring it back to life, I'm not out a lot and it was a fun learning project anyway.

I will, but first to find some of the parts. I'm thinking carbs first see if I can get it running solid as a proof of concept. If I can get the motor running, I'll try to strip it down to bare frame and clean and have it repainted/powder coated. Then rebuild from there.

If that fuel tank was rust free, perhaps I need to start using some Mercury exosphere as opposed to Stabil and fresh fuel before the winter.

Good luck on the restoration JRocket. Keep us posted!

    Shit I’m with the Devil!!
I have bought bikes that supposed to have been in “winter storage mode” and they have green and brown stuff growing in the fuel system… if stuff like that can grow in the fuel systems I have seen them I know for sure their is life on other planets!
    Maybe even Mercury!!!!

Thankfully the owner before the seller drained the tank. So it was stored without any fuel. If it had been stored with fuel I would have walked away.
Tank was empty and the fuel lines had been disconnected. Like I said, I ran a borescope through it and found no major rust issues. A little surface scale on the outside in the nicks in the paint seem to be the worst of it, and a small dent in the left side.
