I am trying to change the grips on my 2002 VFR. I am having trouble sorting out the bar end weight removal procedure. I have the 2002 manual(from here, thanks) but I am not sure if I need to go all the way to just R&R the bar ends. I think I should be able to just take screw loose and remove the weight. Then change the grip and replace the weight. Anyone have experience in this area?

Assuming that it's the same as an '07 just hold the bar end so it doesn't turn and remove the bolt. There is a shoulder (you'll see it when you get the bar end off) that should keep it from turning anyway.

Yes. Hold the black bar end weight real tight and then unscrew the screw holding it in place. It might have the tendency to just spin in place. So hold it real tight. Use a long screw driver, that worked for me. Be careful, cos you may strip the screw head. After that I just used a knife and ripped open the old grips.

Yes if like '07 just hold the weight while undoing the screw/bolt. Unless you are intent on saving the original grips, just slice them with a knife for easier removal. I used the honda grip glue on mine, it worked fine and makes it slippery enough to slip on the new grip.

You don't need to cut the old grips off. Take a long, thin screwdriver and stick it between the grip and handlebar. Shoot a bit of WD-40 in the gap by the screwdriver, and then just twist the handle of the screwdriver. It will roll right around the bar and pull the grip loose. It will then slide right off.

    New Grips...

Thanks all for the info, I was able to remove the bar end weights and swap the grips out. I went with Pro Grip "Superbike" gel grips, so far so good. I did cut off the old stock grips as they were hard and dry. I was reluctant to get too aggressive removing the weights, my last bike(Kawasaki ZR-7S) had no inner weight, etc... so I was being careful. Once I got past my hesitation I used protected Vise-grips and my old "Hammer Driver" to remove the screws. Installed the new grips with hairspray, total time, 20 minutes. Thanks again
